New PC - bit out of touch

Hi Guys,

I am wanting a new PC but haven't really been interested in the latest tech since nearly 10 years ago when I built my own PC so have lost touch of what's what!

I built a PC which had a Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (I think) with an Intel Prescott 2.8Ghz overclocked to 3.2Ghz with 512Mb of RAM.

I upgraded about a year ago and bought a PC from a mate for £50. It's very small and has no space for additional hard drives or anything because it's built to house only what it was sold with. It has no extra power cables!

It's a Packard Bell iMedia something or other with Intel Core2 1.86Ghz and 2GB of RAM.

It's time for something new...

I am thinking of going AMD as it's generally cheaper. I was thinking going for the AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1100T Black Edition 3.30GHz (Socket AM3) with about 8GB of RAM (memory is so cheap now, I can't believe it!!).

I am aware there will be a new AMD processor coming out at some point so would like to get a new AM3+ mobo (which correct me if I'm wrong will work with the above CPU) so if I want I can upgrade easily.

I want a decent graphics card, preferably don't want to spend more than £200 on one. I am told you can combine two together now?

I've got plenty of hard drives, sata an regular ones. I would need a new case, power supply and whatever else I may have forgotten.

PC will be used mainly for browsing, E-mail, MS Office apps, programming - C#, SQL, VBA, etc. I distro hop quite a bit (Linux) and use Windows 7. And potentially the odd game, I stopped gaming on my old PC because it couldn't handle the newer games that were coming out, for example Doom 3. So may well do a bit of gaming, like I said I don't want to limit myself. If I get an decentish graphics card and do decide to game I would consider adding a 2nd gfx card - maybe.

Budget around £700. Case needs to be big, don't want to limit what can be installed by getting a small one.

Not overly interested in overclocking, if it can be achieved easily without adding a million fans or going watercooling I would be interested.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

PC with everything apart from a HDD for a touch under £700. The motherboard/power supply/case could all handle a 2nd graphics card if required for a later upgrade.

The reason I suggest Intel over AMD is that the performance of the Intel chip beats the AMD hex core (in most applications) and there's still nothing to show if the next generation AMD chips will be better value for money than the current generation Intel (plus you won't have the hassle of reselling the Phenom X6).

Thanks very much, Redmint. You must have spent quite some time doing that for me. :)

How many cores do these i5 & i7's have? I've just seen that they have built-in graphics so I could do away with the GFX card and replace the i5 with the i7?

The 2500K/2600K both have 4 physical cores but the 2600K has hyper-threading for 4 extra virtual cores.

if you want to do any sort of gaming then you cannot use the onboard. i honestly wouldnt be surprised if the onboard graphics were worse than the graphics card you have now

Yeah agree with this, if you want to do any kind of gaming then you'll need a dedicated card. Onboard is basically only designed for videos and very basic/old games.

This is a good build that will keep you going for anything from a couple right up to 4 years.

Some issues :

No storage / SSD - If you've ever loaded visual studio or kicked off a compilation from SSD then you'll eyes will pop out of your head >>> Tis FAST

BTW Are you based in Enfield or is that actually your name :)

Thanks guys, like I said I'm not especially interested in gaming so am tempted to leave the GFX card for now. I can always buy one after my next pay day.

SSD, I know absolutely zero about these...

No, not based in Enfield, just a name I chose yonks ago. I'm in Hampshire not far from Redmint actually.

Edit: Reference the Asrock mobo - I've not heard of the manufacturer - are they reliable? I'm under the impression that the mobo is the most important part.

Not sure sure about SSD. I don't like the sound of it degrading in performance.

If I were to get the i5 2500k, would it overclock to 4ghz easy with that RAM? Also what CPU cooler to get?

The G.Skill RipJawsX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-12800CL7D-4GBXM) has lower timings than the Kingston and is same price...

This is what's currently sat in my basket. Anything there to change?

Degrading will take a long, long, long time on modern drives.
