ASUS Xonar DX or d1

DX would probably be the one to get. They are the same card, just PCI or PCIE connection. PCIE would be more future proof though, as PCI will be phased out at some point. Depends what type of motherboard you build your system on when you upgrade. Higher end boards will most certainly phase out PCI soon, and some have done it already. More budget boards will likely keep 1 PCI at least for a while longer, I would have thought.

The DX is the 'better' card because thanks to the PCI-E X1 slot limitations it requires it's own power connection direct from the PSU which isolates it much better from all the electrical noise in the system, which translates to better sound quality.

Is it noticeable? I haven't a clue as there is still a lot of interference from other components (unlike an external DAC) but it can't hurt :p

I think the pcie version has a pci to pcie bridge on the card, so I am wondering if the benefits from having a cleaner power supply are offset by having the card having to convert from a pci to pcie signal
