New car time, going sensible this time.

Brutal honesty time.

Given that it would seem from the plethora of nightmares you've had with literally every car you've bought, it would seem 'buying used cars' does not rank amongst your talents and therefore something with a main dealer warranty may be the way forward here :p

Hehe well I think that somewhat depends on how optimistically I am trying to use my money I suppose and who I am buying from.

The only one I have had serious issues with is was the 540i, the Jag has a few things that need looking at, not really the same sort of thing as the 540i though. The only other used car issue I have had was when I found the door lock on one of the back doors had failed on the ST220, which was replaced under the 3 month AA warranty I had with it.

Passats are awful.
We rented a brand new one in France last week and it was just awful.

Sure, it was the gutless 1.6 diesel, but the 1.6 diesel Golf I have now is a MUCH nicer place to be.
The Passat's ride was far too hard, the plastics were naff and in general it wasn't very nice at all. The Golf, on the other hand, has softer plastics and the ride is much nicer.

Very odd. Whoever buys a recent Passat over a Skoda needs their head looking at.
Mondeos are a bit meh too. So buy a Skoda :D

I have found out during my reading today that the MK4 Mondeo diesels use cambelts! ...the MK3 used a chain ...seems like a backwards step to me. It would seem they are changed at 125k miles ...which also seems like quite a long duration.

Can you really live with a Mondeo? Really?
I suspect you'll realise it's a massive step back and end up changing it for something else in the very near future.

I know it's a step back, I'm not doing this because I want to so much as necessity. There are a few other considerations here anyway.

This would be a worry of Jag ownership as a whole really. After that, could you honestly 'suffer' something sub-par (which was previously normal)?

True, but the thing is with the Mondeo is that it's still a Ford.
Yes, it's a pretty good place to be, IMHO I don't think Fords were ever really that great when it came to interiors...

Moeks - have you considered an X Type?
This seems astonishing value for money. OK, it's done 116k, but it's an 08 for under £7k!

Yea I have been looking at X Types quite a bit actually, I just feel in many ways that I would rather make a clean break and get something different than step down the Jag ladder, the X-Type is a nice car but it's a far cry from an XJ ...even though it does look a lot like a mini version of it on the face of it. I think the MK4 Mondeo is probably, arguably the better car compared to an X Type in many ways, albeit perhaps not when it comes to looks or how nice the leather is.

An X Type is certainly a consideration that I haven't ruled out though, not sure I like the idea of 116k ...but an 08 car on that would have spent most of it's life in the fast lane of the motorway probably ...well it'd have to to get that kind of mileage so quickly ...that or have been a taxi and in the case of the car you linked it clearly wasn't a taxi :p

What sort of economy does the 2.5 turbo petrol give anyway? ...I'm guessing it's going to be mid 20s on average.

There is a grey 1.8 tdci Titanium X up for sale at 8.6k quite close to where I live, thing is the same car was up for sale by the same dealer months ago when I was having a cursory look at Mondeo prices, it has 1 previous owner and it's done 94k ...why would it still be for sale now ...looking at the pictures I can't imagine why it would still be on the forecourt ...hmmm I am very suspicious of that car. I see no reason why a popular and very well specced car at an apparently decent price would still be hanging around months later. It's more that I want to spend anyway ...but the Titanium X spec is very nice, that one also has the wrong engine ...which maybe why it's been for sale so long, I don't know much about the 1.8 TDCI, but it's 8v and single cam ... which makes me relatively impressed that it even manages 125bhp ...ouch.

As a fellow frequent Jaguar owner (With a V6 mk3 mondeo in the mix as well) who stepped away to 'try out' a 740i (an unreliable money pit - which I got rid of very fast), moved to something newer, sensible and just as fast (2006 Saab 9-5 Aero) for the very reasons you describe and moved back to a Jag (2003 4.2 S-type) my advice is:

Stick with the Jag :D

In the last 3 months, 2002 onwards XJs and S-types values have really tanked - and it's not worth getting rid of. If you can only get £4.5k for it, no other car will come close for that amount and whilst the new car will be reliable, these Jags aren't that unreliable.

S type diesel, now i know the reason you want a diesel, thats your car right there :)

Haha it's funny you should mention that, I was just looking at them and wondering weather I could get used to the way they look ...they aren't exactly beautiful like the XJ's are. The nice looking ones do seem a little our of budget though really.

Surely sell your car and buy something as cheap to run as possible if the goal is to save as much money as possible to move abroad with?

Nice as that Jag looks, it's £2k over budget, £1k maybe ...but £2k...

I'm not going to be going anywhere for several years yet Crizzy, probably a good 4 or 5 ...I don't want to drive around in a dustbin until then :p ...but yea, point taken.

If you can go 1k over budget you can go 2k, be a better friend to yourself :)
