4x4 Advice

Discovery 3 values jump all over the place based loosely on the price of fuel, but £12k should get you one. the 2.7TDV6 will never set the world alight - not in something that heavy anyway, but it'll deal with almost anything you can throw at it.

It's very good at the high driving position to look down on poor people thing, which is what a lot are bought for ;)

For 12k you wont get a lot of Disco for your money, maybe an SE with high milage. But beware the body has to come off for even slightly major works.

I'm totally biased, but what about the subaru forester (05-07 spec). Not going to be great for serious off roading, but will tackle anything you're likely to run into unless you join a proper 4x4 club. You can get a mint example for £8-£9k and the model I've got (2.5 XT Turbo) is about as fast and as well handling as you're going to get with a 4x4, at least in your budget. Mine will get 35 MPG on the motorway as well, although it drops to nearly half that around town

If you can stomach 18-22mpg then how about a Porsche Cayenne S, good to drive on/off road and definitely a 'beast'. £10k should get you a mid mileage 2003 I think.
