*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

I just been reading through this page...http://darthhater.com/forum/topic/172

Does this game have healers like in wow or not?

So like in a party/raid the healers keep everyone alive, or is it a game with tanks and dps and everyone just stays alive by killing the other mobs first with group heals being activated by certain class skills?

I heard we have companions that heal but thats for when we're questing/soloing isnt it? I'm sure someone said we cant take companions into partys/raids

If this game doesnt have healers that kinda blags my head coming from a wow background...I guess it could still be good and I'd have to try the game to see if I like it but at same time kinda strange...I think I'd prefer a more traditional tank/dps/healer group/raid with dedicated tanks, dedicated dps, and dedicated healers.

There are healing classes for example Jedi sage has a healing tree,Commando ie has Combat medic as healing tree,so you can put all your skill points in healing tree for those classes if you like.
Basically healers are needed especially for group stuff.

But is it the same as wow, the healer stands at the back and just keeps everyone alive? real-time dedicated healers?

Healer is suppose to heal and tank suppose to tank if thats what you mean, however every class has 3 trees ,commando for example can go healer class as combat medic or range DPS/tank,depends on what tree they specialize in.

Jedi Sage for example can go healer or range DPS specialist, again depending on what they prefer, they could even mix and match from all 3 skill trees.

Every class is different and down to what you prefer, however in general on Republic side healers normally are Jedi Sage or Commando(if they go combat medic tree).
Basically best healers will stick with the healing tree, just remember not all classes have healing tree.

It uses the Trinity system like WoW but uses advanced classes to specialise. For instance a Jedi Sage can chose 3 different advanced classes:

Telekinetics - Affords the power to distort reality and move waves of energy, tearing apart enemies.

Seer - Allows the Sage to master the art of using the Force to heal and protect allies

Balance (shared) - Enhances the Sage’s Force attacks and augments the Shadow's Force and Lightsaber abilities.

So those that want to be a dedicated healer in game would in this case be a Jedi Sage Seer.

Cheers, I understand now, I got seriously worried then for a second after reading that article, lol.

Panic over!:D

EDIT: Ya know, I really cant decide what I want to do this time around, I was mostly DPS in wow, althought I did tank and heal in raids aswell, I'm thinking either tank or dps but then sometimes I think actually I used to enjoy healing aswell...really cant decide...I dont know why its been so hard for me this time around.

Sounds like you want to be commando http://swtor.wikia.com/wiki/Commando

Just reading again on that darth hater...first time I've read on this site today/tonight...someone just mentioned something which sounds interesting.

Do any you that have played the beta know if there is a built in damage meter and threat meter? And are there good group/raid frames...and can you move the UI around to your liking, like if you want the minimap to be at the top right and to move the chat window and health bars etc?

I think I will be going Sith Juggernaut, with my focus split between tanking and DPS.

I can't deicide what to play, Its the Old Republic so I have to have a force user, but then I also want to role a Bounty hunter.. Looks like I'll be nerding it out playing two characters at once :p

Then there's sith etc, being someone who loves too see all the story on characters this is gonna be a nightware :(

Hopefully theres at least 4 character slots off the bat, that way I can have a force user on both sides and another of different role on both sides.

I sure hope that they don't have damage and threat meters ingame. At lest to start with.

I see a lot of people against damage meters, I could assume it's because you hate the elitism it breeds, although very bad players will get spotted regardless. But I want to use it for my own good, so I wish it was self only at least.

Why don't you want it?

Might as well turn the game into a spreadsheet with all the aids available for WoW. UI's are overcomplicated & over-relied upon. Threat meters, damage meters, group/raid healing aids.

Threat meters are the worst like, why should that level of information be available? What purpose does it serve other than removing challenge? Wait until the threat meter's full, DPS attack, oh agro's going down, wait until full again, DPS attack again. Fun? Little chance of anything going wrong, little chance of a challenge to react to.

Damage meters are for bragging, and encourage an all out button rotation style of play for big numbers rather than paying attention to what's going on around then and reacting if necessary. I suppose this is fine in pve.

Healing. Well this isn't too bad I suppose. I have a passionate dislike of the on screen flashing heal boxes that auto target those requiring a heal when clicked, and flash red when they need a heal. Watch the box, click, press a button. And this from an ex druid healer on a full PvP DAoC server, where of course it helped, but it also led a lot of folks to just pay attention to the box, not their positioning, not interrupts, cc etc.. Again, I suppose it's fine for pve, but it's a bit easy isn't it?

Then again I'm PvP so I don't really care, I just think the whole raid UI thing has gone too far when numbers can be seen for everything, and everything can be disected into infinitesimal parts, with little purpose.

/edit: I should add, I have no issue with /self stats, they can be used for self improvement.

I'm not hugely fond of damage meters myself I must admit (we did perfectly well in MMOs before they were invented). I think because of the elitism it breeds as you mention.

I'd say I'm an average player, not good , not bad. Probably just a middling player. It depends how much emphasis the person puts on the damage meter though, ultimately I want people to want me in their groups because I am fun, not because I get over a certain "score" on something. I happily wipe 50 times on something as long as I am having a laugh with people doing it, there are some who use meters and so forth who cant bear to wipe once and wipe a couple of times and anyone who doesnt meet their score minimums gets kicked. Its those kinds who put me off meters, they take the once social MMO gameplay and turn it into a robotic MMO gameplay, where its not the player and his personality that matters, but the character and his items.

It was strange playing without them for a couple of days but I got used to it, now I'd rather they didn't implement them, for the same reasons Tombstone mentions.
