PS3 sounds like a Chinook

I'm using one at the moment to watch Blu-Ray films and it's ridiculously noisy to the point where it's ruining whatever film I'm watching.

Is there anything I can do to shut it up?

I've tried placing it near a window in the draft but that's not doing anything.
You would have thought a respectable company like Sony would engineer a console with a quiet fan and not something noisier than a vacuum cleaner.

I was slightly exaggerating it's not that bad but it is highly annoying. I wonder how easy it would be to take the thing apart and install silent fans?

The only good thing about changing over to a slim was the reduction in noise, it's a LOT quieter.

Try doing the fan test, this might clear things up a bit, failing that, take it apart and clean it all up.

Haha.

It's not the diet version no, it's the original beast, in fact it's pretty old so I'll attempt to take the thing apart now and give it a clean.

I was contemplating buying the Slim seeing this is my brothers but I was hoping by now it would be around the £150 mark, which it isn't.

I bought a new 160GB Slim for £218 on Shopto with free next day delivery. You could try there, everywhere else it is like £230+ pretty much.

Cheers, I'm not sure it's a good use of money though I only really play Black Ops and finding myself with less and less time for gaming. Might wait until MW3 comes out.

I opened up the beast and it was coated in dust so cleaned it up a bit, having a gaming session tonight so I'll let you know if it still sounds like a hornets nest.

Open it up, clean it out and replace the fan.. Whatever you do get one of the 19 blade fans NOT the Talismoon replacement... Its terrible.. It truly is. Mine was blowing like a good un so i thought i would buy the talismoon one. It sounded like someone had thrown a pocket full of gravel inside the ps3. The 19 blade fans are VERY good but a bit hard to find but they are well worth the money. Think i paid £12 for mine delivered (Second hand but great condition) and its silent.

Also replace the thermal compound on the chips with something better but make sure that you put a nice thick layer on as some people have mentioned it not making contact with a thin layer.
