ESA is the successor to Incapacity Benefit and claimants are required to go through a series of tests to judge their fitness for work.

The department has released the results from 1.3 million tests over a period of more than two years which showed:
7% were incapable of any work
17% were able to do some sort of work given the correct support
39% were deemed to be fit for work and were moved onto jobseeker's allowance
36% dropped out of the application process
1% of applications were still in progress

I knew that some people were abusing the system but this is shocking and shows that it is a worthwhile exercise.

The problem is who are going to employ these people when there are over 2 million out of work?

From what I've seen thus far it's more indicative of a terribly broken assessment system than a case of a majority abusing the system.

ESA are a bunch of *****!

My mum was not only a self harmer, needed long term psychogical help had the letters, she also has a PFO and paralitic migrains which could strike at anytime. They said she was fit for work and the tribunal failed.

Tossers, they are pretty much even trying to force fully disabled people into work as it looks good for stats!

Unfortunately the support for those who can work, but have issues, seems to be almost non-existant.

Like myself, i was under a full work scheme and ready to go into volunteer work .The government made the entire scheme redundent and every person that worked in the company was thrown out to look for work, there is NO help for autisic people until september at the earliest when the scheme was working before.

GOVERNMENT/ESA ARE TOSSERS END OF :mad::mad::mad:

Why can't disabled people work?

They aren't abusing the system the tests are just too hard so that nearly everyone is unable to pass. This was introduced by Labour some party they are punishing the genuinely ill.

I think these assessments are carried out by a group called ATOS health care, who are paid by the government to fail as many benefit claimants as possible no matter how ill they are. Many cases they fail the terminally ill, as far as they've concerned if you can walk out the house you can get a job.

Shocking. It's truly shameful how badly this government is treating the most vulnerable in society.

3.1 million people claim disability benefit in this country. Absolutely disgusting. The Government are finally doing something to clean up the God awful mess Labour have left behind.

36% at the very least weren't, that's over a third of the claimants.
They refused to be tested, that surely means it's a worthwhile exercise. And if those abusers are weeded out, there may well be more cash available long term for those who need it.

Has anyone ever actually seen this new 'fitness for work' questionnaire/assessment?

* What are you supposed to have wrong with you?
* Can you hold a piece of paper?
* Can you put something in your pocket at least one time?
* Can you speak?

If so you're fit for work... :o

This, My mum was assessed and taken off the sick. Went to tribunal and didn't even have to fight it. They had pull the records from her doctor and various specialists all stating she is un-fit for work and will unlikely be fit for work ever again.

We got the report that was used to take her off of the sick and it was full of ****.

They had to back pay her for most of the year.

Yes people do play the system, But in my experience it's the people who play the system that know what to say and when to say it.

This sort of thing was on bbc the other day, on program called world craziest fools, basically there was a story on a man claiming around 40K becouse he was unfit to work, but was summoned to court becouse he was in some world strongest man championships, could lift a mini, pull a truck and them sorts of things, what was he thinking :D

No reason for the 36% was given. They could have been unable to complete the assessment, failed to understand what was needed of them or some of those who have lost their benefits because the assessment agencies overbooked their slots. It's pure assumption that they're involved in fraud.
