New 2.0 TFSI VW out of oil after 4k miles

I must say that my VW 2.0TFSI engine consumed plum zero oil between services since brand new. I am coming up to my 80k mile service in 6 years now and I have never had to add a drop of oil to it. My sisters VW 2.0 TDI 140 on the other hand gets 1L every 3000 miles.

Top trumps? :D the stuff I work on holds 6000 litres - and its checked constantly with 2 sump level sensors (which fail from time to time). The old dipstick's the way forward. :)

Well & truly trumped there! :D

How long is the dipstick? - the trucks is about 5ft!

Does it just say "Oil OK" or something?

No, it shows you a picture of the car, a guage, and shows you the oil level on it. I just took a pic but it doesnt show the guage with the engine not up to temp:

Actually its not that big (about 3-4 ft) because the sump on these things are wide and long - maybe about half the size of your trailer.
Not sure what sort of power your engine is putting out or the actual physical size of the thing, but we have Cummins KTA19's (~500bhp) as standby machine's (which hold 40 litres) and the stick on those is only about the same length as a car would be. :)

So will it not start if there is not enough oil in there?

Pretty much the same here. Apart from the annual servicing I think I've only added a litre or two at the most to mine in 18k miles.

The 2L TFSI can use a fair amount of oil as already metioned it is 1 litre of oil from the min to the max. The engine holds 4.8L of oil and using 1L in 4K is one of the better engines not uncommon for a litre every 2k. I ran mine in fairly hard and it uses very little oil.

No idea. I guess not as it wont measure it until its up to temperature.

It'll bong, presumably, and have a cry if it reaches minimum. The 525i with the older iDrive did that the other day.

Bong! Please add 1 litre engine oil.

And does it really tell you how much to put in?

I'm shocked a modern engine uses so much oil.

Admittedly I don't own a diesel but my 17 year old VR6 isn't using any noticable amount (done around 800 miles in it so far) and my 8 year old V6 4Mo simply doesn't ever use oil. In about 43k I've never had to add any outside of the services.

Oh and I wouldn't trust the lack of a dipstick on the BMW. It might be great now but one day the sensor will break.

It does, yes, but I I suspect it only ever tells you to add a litre - on the older BMW's like my E39 you get an orange light when the oil is on minimum and the owners handbook tells you to add 1 litre when the light comes on.

So I suspect the newer ones are simply programmed to tell you to add 1 litre when the level reaches min.

Thats why owning modern BMW's without a warranty is a silly idea.

If it all goes wrong, a nice man from BMW comes along, scoops it off the roadside and drops me off at Enterprise for a hire car.

I feel a little bad, I know how to check oil however I'm not sure how much to put in when it falls below the level indicator. I'm also not sure what oil I should be putting in

Well I've learned something there. Cheers. I'm not a big fan of how it works tbh, but horses for courses and all that. :)
