Seems to be a fad around here for having a german number plate on the front of your VW or BMW, seen loads recently. Usually on cars that don't have to have a front licence plate ( quebec, other US states ).

Has this been going on long, or is it a relatively new thing ? Guy at work who lives in mass and has a VW jetta is putting one on his.

Certainly in the UK it's predominantly VW fans who do it.

Looks bloody stupid to be honest, especially considering that here people do both plates, leaving neither "legal".

My mate has just fitted some to 5 grands worth of minty mint standard looking mk1 golf 16v.... ruined it :(

Really?

So you think that fitting number plates in the style of another country, the country the car's from even, ruin it?

Yes it looks tacky, my other mate has an even nicer very early mk1 golf and his has period uk pressed metal plates. Looks much better.

The two golfs in question.... The german plates look crap in comparison.

I should hope so, the blue ones worth about 10 grand but has a pitiful 1.5 engine and 4 speed box and is just a garage queen - pointless IMO.

Other one is nearly as mint (and I mean concours) but has a proper 1.8 16v using all german parts, the wheels are going for some simple BBS splits and it will be perfect apart from the damn plates - and it gets used properly too :)

German plates on a UK car look silly. It's akin to using a black screw cover to make different letters. Avoid.

its wierd when you see if over here, with the long plate on the front, then the US shape plate on the back. First time i saw it, i thought they were in the airforce and had brought their car back from germany lol

Wasn't there a guy on Traffic Cops stopped recently and was told his rear plate had to be changed because it was done in this style? Think it was a modded mk3 Golf.
