Mozilla concept phone

The dongle in the back was quite awesome, then the projected keyboard and screen was even better. Hopefully something like this would actually be available in the next few years.

Nice, loved the Windows 7 desktop view :D
Most of it is current tech too, has the Samsung pico projector android phone been released yet?

Amazing, this is the future of PC/Mobile technology.

I really think this could be made, if it wasn't the restraints in battery technology.

Looks fantastic, but with that much tech I'd imagine a very hefty monthly fee almost to the point where it would be considered a specialist phone.

Videos seems to be gone, but just seen this on BBC news

The creators of the Firefox web browser have started developing an operating system for mobiles and tablets.

Although the project will draw on some parts of Google's Android mobile operating system much of the code will be freshly written.

Once finished the operating system will compete with Android as it will run on the same devices.

The project team said all code development would be done in the open and shared as soon as it was written.

Called Boot To Gecko the code creation is being overseen by the Mozilla Project which created the Firefox browser. It was announced on the Mozilla discussion forum by researcher Andreas Gal.

Gecko is the rendering engine that powers the Firefox browser and the Thunderbird email program. A rendering engine interprets the code on webpages and displays it in the right format on screen.

With B2G, the Mozilla developers aim to get applications running without the need for the browser, effectively creating a web-centred operating system.

It will draw on some core parts of Android but aims to add a wrapper around it that is much more open than the one created by Google. If successful, the project will face stiff competition from Google's Android and Chrome as well as Apple's iOS and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.

The Mozilla team admitted that the project was in its "infancy" but said it already created some basic software from building blocks that are similar to those needed to get the OS running.

The team said they were publicising the project to root out experts in the Mozilla community and elsewhere who could help and encouraged them to get in touch and sign on.

Mr Gal said the project had set its sights high and wanted to do it "the way we think open source should be done".

Its ultimate goal, he said, was "breaking the stranglehold of proprietary technologies over the mobile device world".

Sounds cool but can't imagine it being more popular than Android. Can't imagine Google are too happy either ;)

I'd love if there was a phone released with just the looks of that phone. Doesn't need any of the concept fancy bits really.

If they ever managed to make the phone looking that nice and even got some the features they showed there into the first interation of the product I'm sure there would be a lot of people interested in buying it.

Has everyone missed out on Acids stealth bump? :D

It's all about Mozilla creating another mobile OS (based on Android) that'll run on existing, bootloader unlocked hardware, kinda like CM7.

Wouldn't it be great if you could install any Linux based OS on your phone easily?

There are a few distros compiled for ARM, the problems arise with drivers - how do you get the touch screen, buttons, camera, wifi not to mention mobile network connection working?

Looking at that video again I'm not sure it's really that far into the future as some of the other posters have suggested.

The haptic bluetooth "wand" is I assume quite possible with todays tech (gyro with tiny battery and bluetooth reciever) and the pico projectors are around. There is plenty of space in the body for them. No reason that I could see that that phone could't be released tomorrow... Yeah battery life would be pretty poor if you used the projectors much and the Win7 install could be a bit laggy (assuming it is a virtual machine) depending on connection speed but other than that...

As for the new OS I think for it to suceed it would need to be able to run all Android software... Otherwise I don't think there would be enough development to get that many people interested. It's not like they have Billions to persuade developers to develop for it.

EDIT: something like that with enough punch and storage space to run Windows 8 would be superb. Maybe a hibernating version of Win 8 in the background and WP7 as the main OS. Add a dumb screen dock for tablet and you have one almighty phone...:D
