Hey all,

Bit of a long shot but it seemed like a good place to ask :)

I'm off to Switzerland for 2 weeks in October, I'd like to hire a car for the duration.

Having never hired a car before, apart from googling 'car hire switzerland' I have no idea where to start :p

I know a few people travel in Europe a fair bit so wondered if anyone here had first hand experience of any companies in particular? :)

Any advise welcome!

Thanks,
Jake

When we were in Geneva I hired a car from Europcar. Picked it up and returned it from the French side of the airport because it was cheaper than on the Swiss side.

Don't expect it to be cheap, but just check Hertz, Sixt, etc.
Don't waste your time with Avis as they are always about £100 more than everyone else

Sometimes http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/ have good deals, but not always.
Still worth a look though.

I always used Sixt in Germany, could get a Smart for about 25 Euros a day or a Focus Estate for about 10 euros more. That was a few years ago though.

Generally booking the car online for hire at Geneva is a cheaper option then just showing up at the desk.

I can't help you with the car hire in Switzerland mate, but I can assure you Switzerland is a beautiful country - went their last summer with the missus.

I have hired in the UK and over here you're advised to take out hire insurance when you rent a vehicle - so make sure you include that when you're booking.

Have a great time mate.

Thank you!

I'm going for a roadtrip for a couple of weeks with my camera - cannot wait! :)

I used a company called Auto Europe when i went skiing for a week, was a Europecar Car but a lot cheaper.

I would strongly recommend taking out the additional Excess Car Insurance as we had someone drive into us, and it ended up not costing me anything, was the best £30 i ever spent.

Change of plan, I've found a car I can use for a few weeks - so I'm going to drive there! :D

Thanks anyway guys!

Seem to remember you need a pass to use the motorways in Switzerland, think its called a vignette...we always hire our cars from the Swiss side of Geneva because they always have it already..but seeing as you are now driving there yourself you might want to purchase one on the internet, they are about 25-30 quid
