I have managed to get an Alpha code for BF3. I went to the website to register and got accepted straight away. Downloading as we speak

Well it's certainly entirely random now, many people saying that they've got old accounts leftover that have got access, looks like it's entirely down to luck with your account.

For others not in, try any old EA account you might have forgotten about.

Downloaded, played and going to uninstall unless I can find out how to change control settings.

Good game but I have a non default keyboard layout and playing WASD style makes me play worse than a 5 year old.

Use AutoHotkey mate, search this thread for it someone else used it I think.
