Best cooler for i5 750, less than £40?

Hi guys,

CPU is getting a bit toasty lately with the heat and due to that, very loud.

At the minute I have a i5 750 at stock using the stock intel cooler that came with it in an antec sonata 3 case, I don't have any plans on over clocking at all, maybe sometime in the future when I actually need to for games etc.

So which one is best for cooling, main priority being noise as my PC is right next to me on my desk?

Thanks in advance :)

Ok, how would that compare to this one, which seems to be very popular:

Also just seen that antec have some coolers in the price range of £17, what are these like?

Also I presume that these will be a lot quieter than the intel stock cooler especially at load?

Wow, that looks very good for the price, the gelid one.

Also I presume that the gelid one would fit in my case ok?

Haha, yeah they should be, although I have been rather impressed with the stock cooler, at idle it is usually around 35-40 (in this heat though around 50) and at load it is around 70-75, the main thing is the noise at load, does my head in, which means sound has to go up and then everyone in the house can hear gun fire, explosions etc. :D

i'm going to ask my usual two questions:

- what case do you have?
- do you have RAM with tall heatspreaders?

(i dont want to recommend something that wont fit)

Thanks! :)

I will measure the dimensions when my PC is off next time.

Nope no fans on the side at all, just one () 120mm antec tri cool at the back.

Tell me about it! :p

oops. missed that

*edit*
also, the sonata 3 is one of the many cases where the max cooler height supported is not listed

I have an antec sonata 3 case that came with the antec Earth watts 500W PSU.

And this is the RAM that I have here:

Only 2, one in the second slot and the other in the 4th.

And if this makes any difference at all, my motherboard :p:

Thanks.

EDIT:

Too slow :o

thanks.

the RAM will be fine with most heatsinks, it may push a fan upwards a little, but that will be about it.

also theres nothing on the motherboard thats going to get in the way :)

You should be fine with ram, I have the Patriot vipers on my system and I needed to up the fan up the cooler a little on my TRUE.

Yeah, just hope it will fit in fine considering my case with PSU on top.

Nice, good to hear.

Lol, yeah wasn't too sure, if the RAM slots would be closer to the CPU part or further away on some motherboards if you know what I mean.

very few coolers overhang the motherboard at the top, especially on the intel sockets as they tend to be mounted further from the top of the motherboard than the AMD's

be better off getting a corsair h50 for £30 in the members market.

Wow , that is a great price.

But:

- I don't have a great case for it, only got 1 120mm fan at the back and the only other place I can place a fan is sort of in the middle, behind the hard drive cage, so it wouldn't do any good for internal case temperature and other components temperatures
- And I am one of these people who don't like having water (especially water cooling kit) any where near the PC encase there is a leakage :p

Ok, thanks.

And thanks to the rest for the help :)

Will measure the case and have a think about it.

Ok, I have ordered the gelid cooler :). Hope it is a rev. 2, read in another thread that 5UB said it was.

And it should fit in the case I think.

Just a question now:

NVM

can you show some pictures when you have it all installed
interested in how it performs looking for a cooler for my i5-750 as well

thanks

Yup will do and will also post temps before and after :)

It arrived not too long ago, will be installing it sometime tomorrow.

It is massive (but looks very cool indeed ), seems bigger than what I thought with my measurements in the case, just hope it will fit :p
