HPI check - DVLA mileage doesn't match!

Hi all

Long story short, test drove a Seat Leon 1.6 SX 04 Plate from a trader last Saturday and put a £100 deposit down and agreed to buy it. The mileage on it and on the advert was around 105,000. It had FSH with stamps etc. I don't recall there being many MOT certificates though.

I got a call earlier today saying that I can come pick it up tomorrow morning (there was a crack on the left passenger rear arch which they'd look at).

I thought I'd do an HPI check and was presented with this:

Source Date Mileage
DVLA 09/06/2011 154,000

I'm going to check it out tomorrow, any advice on what to do/ask/check for?

I'll be paying £1200 + my Rover 214 (99).

Edit: Also comes with a 3 month warranty.

Cheers

I'd just leave it with it having 50k chopped off it's mileage. Or look at the 3 or 4 MOTs and check the mileage.

Just buy one that isn't clocked and has history?

I'd be asking where those 50k miles went, then I'd be asking for my deposit back and walking away.

Actually I'd ask for my money back first then mention the mileage.

^^ that MOT check site is great.

OP, moan about the mileage then get your money back, he won't drop it down to the value of a car with that mileage as he might be able to sell it to somebody who doesn't check for the full price.
And then there is the matter of where the other 50k of servicing has gone on the paperwork...

Not being sarcastic.. right?

I think I'll ask about the mileage before asking for the deposit back, I'm sure that they wouldn't just hand over the money without hearing the reason why.

Woah - did you ninja edit?

I don't think I'd buy it even for a heavily reduced price to be honest!

It's too bad - there aren't many SX Leon's near me!

It a real giveaway that the car is dodgy when the seller won't let you check the mot history online, saved me driving a few miles to check out a car while we were looking for something for the wife.

Also let me find out my latest motor has had 330k knocked off ;)

It's not that he didn't let me check the MOT history online I haven't asked. I'll need to go down there to get my money back anyway if the MOT history check doesn't come back the way I want it.

I thought I would be picking up the car on Thursday/Friday but got a call that it's ready today. Only did the HPI check a couple of hours ago :S

Thanks!

Of course it's ready early, he wants rid!

take your keyboard with you tbh. the biggest issue with loosing 50k miles is it puts the maintenance schedule completely off. certain things become "consumables" at certain points in its life and without knwoing the real mileage it will be more difficult than necessary to keep on top of the maintenance.

id only touch it if it was uber cheap

Cross check against as many other sources of info as you can, HPI checks are not infallible, you'd be surprised how often they hold info that's just flat out wrong.

That MOT link from above is a good start.

Did the MOT link yesterday and the mileage from DVLA was wrong, the MOTs went up to 105k as expected over the 5 or so years.

Very happy with the car so far (It's been a day).

unlikely you will get full deposit amount back. they will say to you its your fault "you should have check fully before putting deposit down".

but i hope you will get it tho.

He would have got the full deposit back.

But anyway, try reading the whole thread. ;)

Its 100 quid of course hes going to get it all back, do you think that dealer wants trading standards up his arse for the sake of 100 quid?
