Well today is a **** day!

Got called up to my managers office and he accused me of creating a firewall rule on the firewall called Kevin Test (Kevin is my name). I said to him that I have no idea what it was and has told me I had 30 minutes to come up with an explanation.

Went to my desk and called the guys who manage our network and asked them if they knew anything about it and then I remembered that I was trying to get Remote Assistance working as we were unable to connect to some new machines in East Anglia.

I called one of the techs there and we tried to get it to work and my guess was that he created it to do some of the tests and called it that.

So I went up to my managers office and basically said that it wasn't me that created it and that myself and the tech were trying to get RA to work so that we can remote into the machines in East Anglia order to be able to help them when they had issues.

According to him i was overstepping my responsibilities and that i had broken a rule in the e-communications policy (he didn't specify which one) and sacked me on the spot.

So, i'm now at home calling every recruitment agency trying to find work.

Fun times. :(

What is your job role exactly? are you authorised to admin firewalls? More details on the firewall rule? did it cause a major security threat?

Can they prove it was you other than it being called "Kevin Test" as anyone who has access can create a rule with any name, do you "not" get on with anyone in the office?

Seems a bit harsh really, I would have expected they would have just asked you about it, then gave you a slap on the wrist, unless it was causing a MAJOR security threat.

I deal with firewalls everyday.

Sounds like your boss wanted rid of you.

Surely something like that is auditible? There must be a way of finding out who did it and then you can put the blame on them?

unfair dismissal?

Really does sound unfair :(

Deffo unfair

People make mistakes every day! If he was to sack everyone that made a minor mistake like that, he would probably be hiring new staff very very often

i'd be getting myself prepared to take it to a tribunal.. from what you've said your hold minimal responsibility for whats happened so shouldnt really be punished as harshly esp with no prior warnings or convictions.. was there disciplinary action taken, were you on a trial period, agency staff?

This sounds extremely harsh. Surely there is a disciplinary process that has to be adhered to before getting sacked?

Sounded like your manager over reacted big time. No investigation done and sacking on the spot. I would be temped the call who ever you think created the rule and just say you might need a statement from them at some point and confirm facts before your manager decide to say something to them.

without knowing all the details and your job/where you worked I would go down the unfair dismissal route.

I wouldnt want to get your job back unless that manager lost his as to be honest he sounds like a job worth unless he was looking for a reason to fire you.

You haven't been with his wife have you. :D

From what I've read, you did Not create the firewall rule... one of the guys at Bistech who manage your network did, therefore You are Not responsible and your managers grounds for giving you the sack are unfounded... All you did was contact your network team to get help resolving a network issue... Unfair Dismissal!
