Amy Winehouse found dead

Same with Cigarettes, some people will probably go mental. Can't see why it's different than alcohol

It is way different because nobody has ever died from just coming off cigarettes or illegal drugs.
The most you will suffer is being uncomfortable or cold turkey which will not kill you.
(There is another illegal drug that somebody pointed to in another thread a couple of years ago that can also cause death on immediate withdrawal but I forgot what it was).
Alcohol withdrawal has to be safety managed .

(Apologies to Magnolia for posting about health issues).

No but the effects are the same for serious 'abusers'. Take them off cold turkey they soon get jitterish

No they won't

Yep. Not every hospital story is as glorious as yours i'm afraid :p

Take them off cold turkey and they get jitterish?
Being on cold turkey is the thing that makes them jitterish.
Oh and they won't die being jitterish.

So you are adamant that taking a cocaine user off coke will kill them?
Sauce?

Look down the page here at withdrawal symptoms - http://www.addictionsandrecovery.org/cocaine.htm which surprised me by saying: There are no physical withdrawal symptoms from cocaine, which is why people sometimes trick themselves into thinking they aren't addicted to it

(and apologies to Magnolia)

I smoke and i am mainly scared of stopping because of cancer...and i say that because my grandad smoked for about 55 years or more, stopped and died of cancer 1 year after giving up. It seems to me he died because he gave up, and i've heard of other people that have got cancer after giving up fags :/

While I'm always prepared to change my opinion based on facts/studies/evidence presented, I'm pretty sure the 55 years of smoking was a much greater contributor than the cessation of smoking. However, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. :(

You believe the cancer formed because he stopped smoking after 55 years? Am I misunderstanding what you're saying?

The vid just shows how far she was gone at times. I know ive had some really heavy benders but I still know when to stop, due to work commitments and so so on.

Throw me a few million and loads of the wrong people around me and who knows though.

Because many people who give up do so at an age when cancer is greatly increased; their forties and fifties. The fact they have given up does not undo all the damage already done, just some of it. How many people do you know who have given up smoking at thirty and got lung cancer within a year or two?

I hear snake oil is good for what you've got wrong with you...:p

Please please tell me this isn't serious

This is why alcoholics are safety managed and given money to buy alcohol.
Take alcohol away and the organs can close down.

Given money by who? The DWP don't pay money to alcoholics so they can buy alcohol; alcoholics are eligible for benefits such as DLA because of their condition. However, the money isn't intended to be used to purchase alcohol it's for help with personal care and getting around.

Agree with the second part though. Alcohol withdrawal can lead to delirium tremens which can be fatal in about one in four cases. Even with proper treatment there is still around a five percent chance of dying from DTs.

This is a side I don't understand and never went into on my courses.
So I suppose if an alcoholic wants to clean up they follow guidelines laid down by the professionals and slowly buy less alcohol until they are safe to come completely off it?
