A man whose son died after playing video games for long periods is campaigning for greater awareness of the risk posed by their excessive use.

Looks like this guy was sat down for about 16 hours a day (pretty much the time your awake) on his PS3/Xbox. Quite worrying as someone who has spent the last 4 weeks sat at his computer on 4 hour stints at a time.

Sitting still for long periods can cause this, it's a well known fact. Doesn't matter what you're doing if it's not physically active then you are at an increase risk. There's nothing to say this guy wouldn't have gotten this from working in an office or driving a truck.

Pft, pc gaming is where it's at.

The choice of hardware would be irrelevant to his death...

Pretty sad story, but it does sound like he was spending all his waking hours on the thing.

Yep, just getting up and walking around for 5-10 minutes an hour would have helped him probably.

To be fair to the guy he even says he has no problem with the consoles, it's just the fact people play them for extended periods without moving which as he rightly says poses a risk of DVT, the same as sitting on a plane or watching TV.

What he's doing can only be a good thing, should have a lot of respect for the man.

lol, this story annoys me how the media blame "gaming", the "xbox" etc. (The Sun and BBC News at 10pm last night have been among the worst).

- plenty of people sit down for very long periods of time in offices, call centers etc.
- From the picture you can clearly see that the guy is very overweight.
- If this was such a "significant" risk as the media are making out, there would be people dropping all over the place

I have played for 15-16 hours in a row before and never dropped dead

This.
Good to see he doesn't blame consoles, even though it would be a good thing to get rid of them, so we can get more PC exlusives!
:D

Sitting around probably only contributed to an underlying cause of the DVT, otherwise everyone with a sedentiary job would be at risk, including drivers, office wirkers, factory workers etc....

Here come the anti-gaming brigade, despite he's stating comparisons and not blaming it on gaming.

That's exactly what I said to a friend yesterday. Plus the lad is clearly overweight which probably didn't help.

This and this.

I couldn't help but laugh at the comments on The Sun website along the lines of "I might be next! OMG!".

Some friends on facebook were wondering a month or so ago where their friend was as he's not been online recently.... yesterday one of them posted the article up saying it was him. Crazy. :<

Surely he would get up to poo/poo/cook/wash etc?

To be honest, I can't post the picture I really want to :p

EDIT - lol there is a gif of that scene, makes me feel ill :o

Sitting still was a contributing factor. People don't tend to die from just sitting still for a long period of time.

What kind of father let's his son play video games for 16 hours anyway?
