Hi all

Quick question - for gaming and some overclocking is there a need to go for the i7. Have looked at the Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor as my choice and for Overclocking what Cooler would you recommend.

Ta in Advance

I think there is very little difference between the two however there is some difference,

All benchmarks you see for them compared against each other, they will be at stock speeds. Therefore, the i7 will always win because it has a higher clock speed. If however, the i5 was OC to the same speed as the i7, there would be no difference at all.

No such thing has 'future proofing' never has been and never will, new parts come out all the time.

Lastly forget Intel altogether overpriced and underperforming, get an AMD Phenom II X2 555 3.2ghz and unlock the 2 extra cores via the bios far better for gaming and far better value for money.

+1 for the i5 for all your gaming needs.

More than enough at the moment for gaming, and easy to overclock when you need some more power in the future.

I currently have a 1090t which will go to my sons comp - have not been impressed with it gaming wise. Not OC'd it mind u as i cant find a decent guide

? was a genuine question I asked

Dont think it was aimed at you, More the uninformed replies by some.

I know this is a forum, and everyone should have a right to post, but sometimes people shouldn't post advice to people when they haven't a clue what they're talking about. I wouldnt venture into the motors section and give advice for instance!

Out of the 2 choices, Get yourself the i5. The i7 is a great processor, but the price difference vs performance boost in games isnt worth the cost.

Sorry but I have always prefered AMD they have always offered better value for money and technology in their CPU's for gaming.

That may have been true at one time but certainly not these days. You need to keep up with current tech before you attempt to give out advice.

That was a long time ago. Intel now have the performance crown and most probably always will. The Sandy Bridge architecture will run for at least a few years from now, and if Bulldozer isn't up to scratch, when Ivy Bridge comes out AMD may as well forget about CPU's and just try and market their current ones for budget computers.
