Hi folks,

I orignally ran with a 4870x2 and this died :(. (past warrenty) so I borrowed my brothers 8800gts 512 and this has died now (he was a heavy gamer).

What I'd like to know is what you'd recommend as a cheap alternative? is the 400 series any good? 420's etc? good but cheap is what i'm after!

Thanks

Price range, and how long do you plan on keeping it for?

Currently waiting for new chipset to come out from Intel plus new graphic offering's so will then actually purchase a whole complete unit.

I'm currently on the following
9450 Intel running at 3.6Ghz
4GB ram
1 TB HD
Windows 7
1000W power unit.

Budget £20-60 so something better then 8800GTS.

8800GTX
However, THIS would be the best, slightly over budget

EDIT: DAMN YOU BELLS!!!

in a despate attempt to revive bothcards and save ome dough do the oven trick, it should keep them going fot a bit longer

In an (almost) identical situation. My 8800GT is almost dead. Looking at alternatives that were cheap but could handle BF3. Doesnt exist, so narrowed it down to XFX ATI Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition I think. Decent compromise. Bit more RAM (up to 6G) and it should run ok. £130. Bit over your budget, but I'm trying to take a more long-term view.

Get a used GTX 280 for about 50-60 quid. Still a blindingly fast card on most games so long as you're not fussed about DX11. I've honestly not noticed all that much real world difference since switching from a 280 to a 580, in all but a few games.

Blows the 8800GTX out of the water

The GTS 450 is MUCH more powerful than the 8800GTX yet the 5770 still beats it by a mile :)
Not true...GTS450 is only slightly faster than GTS250, which itself is a rebranded 9800GTX+ which is a tiny bit faster than 8800GTX.

Roughly speaking, the 5770 is around 25~30% faster than a 8800GTX:

While it is not shown there, a 8800GTX should sit betweem the 4770 and 4850 in terms of speed.
