have I been mugged?

I got hold of a 775 chip the other day, it was meant to be a Q8400, it was covered in compound, so cleaning it off i notice 'Intel extreme QX6700' So like a mug i think 'ahh it must be something i've missed'

So build new rig today etc etc, grab CPUID to check it and yes its a QX6700

So have i been mugged off? Is it a CPU of equal measure, i'm not too worried about the power savings of 45nm but i am worried about performance! Google isn't so much of a friend on this one, I cant seem to find much info at all on the QX6700 against the Q8400.

So guys what do you think?

I mean i've never had a 3dmark06 score that high, or WEI too for that matter, but is it worth making a fuss over?

Hmm how much did you pay for it?

According to the anandTech benchmarks the Q8400 is a little bit better than the Qx6700

I personally would be a little bit ****ed as you have not got what you paid for.

Then again its up to you. Depending on where you got the cpu from, it may be more hassle than its worth asking for a refund or a swoop etc.....

Are you happy with the performance?

is the unlocked multi of the QX any good to you ? if not then maybe try for a refund. atleaast ask them what has happened , possibly just posted the wrong cpu

I do feel a bit peeved yeah, but not sure how much to be lol. Auction so too much hassle really to return (my fault really, should have expected it). Paid £73 all in. Have no idea if that was worth it though.

Yeah i'm happy... very happy with the performance, but i think its like driving a porsche after using a mini.... but i paid for a veyron.... maybe its not lol. But i do plan to OC it soon, and i do hear the QX6700 is a good clocker in general as its unlocked. But again not sure how that stacks against a Q8400.

Overall though i'm happy like you say, so will stock with it regardless i guess, its just a small smudge on my otherwise pristine happiness lol.

Well in terms of 2nd hand resale value they're pretty much the same (the extreme edition maybe worth slightly more as it's the top model that's compatible with some older 775 boards). In terms of performance it'll depend slightly on the app/game, however generally they'll be pretty similar at stock speeds and the QX6700 might be slightly better if both were overclocked.

I'd say u got a better deal!
QX6700 has lower bus of 1066 compared to 1333 of q8400 and 65nm as to 45nm of q8400 and has 135W TDP as to 95W TDP of q8400.
But on the plus side, it is unlocked multiplier! 8Mb L2 cache as to 4MB of Q8400.

You got an unlocked multiplier, overclock the thing and might clock higher than the Q8400 could due to fsb limitations.. the Q8400 might be better at stock due to the slight clockspeed difference, not sure if clock for clock its better due to the 4mb cache, but am guessing the 8mb cache and overclockability of the QX6700 is a better tradeoff.

If you plan to overclock then you got the better chip.

Awesome, cheers everyone! It sounds that for me I have (somehow) got a better deal as I do plan to overclock it as much as I can on air.

I was worried as all I could find online were various forums and threads that contradicted each other or couldn't agree one way or the other.

Best advice here as always! And you all seem to agree!!!

Oh Stulid... thanks for the advice man, got the GPU you speccd for me, very happy with it... off to play bf3.... :]

Would much rather have the QX that you got. QX used to cost mega money at the time.

:D Good news!

Your going to have to remind me which card it was, I do so many specs I cant remember.

You suggested the gigabyte GTX 560 ti OC that is/was on this week only for £180 for my budget or there abouts, and I must say it seems well worth the money! Just need to get some more new games to push it lol. Really glad i've got back into building and overclocking again, you get so much more bang for your buck than I have with my laptop (obvious really, but needed the space at the time).

Ah yes.

Any pics:D good pics?

Well of course! ;) Well i think there ok anyway lol

Oh and you probably dont remember but I was going to use it in an Icute case with a 250mm side fan, lol well the side panel would not go back on as the card was too wide of all things! lol we discussed the length, not in a million years did i think width would be an issue. Changed it at work for a NZXT beta EVO now though

Cheers :) The more eagle eyed will notice I have opted to not have an optical drive, just dont see the point after installing the discs i needed, i'll never use it again, and if i do, its in a drawer.

Oh the Cit (apt lol) 750W PSU is going to be the very first upgrade... its a stop gap.... a cheap stop gap.... a cheap and' i've run out of funds' stop gap.

Unless heat/power was an issue I'd rather have the QX6700 myself - only thing I'd have over a Q6600/QX6700 would be a Q9550/Q9450.
