Mmm question, looking to get myself a DH bike, and having seen the likes of YT Tues and Canyon FRX all for around the £2k mark, I realised something.

My old man moved back to Florida 3 months ago, could I not get a bike from there and have it sent as a gift? I could get something much nicer for roughly the same money.

Trek Session 8 for 2.2k sounds yummy.

Bike bag with a rusty wreck inside, take a holiday to florida ditch the wreck put shiny new DH bike in bag come home :D

Good luck trying to sneak it through customs without paying Import Duty etc. A "gift" has strict limits on value... About £50 or so... I may be wrong but its def under £500

Edit: unless you to it Itchyballs way.

my hardtail has been doing a lot of road miles recently, i'm using ss race king tyres and it seems a waste to use them on the road ,is it worth me buying some slick tyres would i notice much difference in speed and grip, also can you spec me some cheap slicks.

if you put slicks on, its like being one or two gears up. say your in tenth gear, with slicks it would feel like 8th.

weescott, did your helmet take much of a blow? and do they offer a half price replacement like some makes?

So how did you graze your knee landing on your head? :p

It was my full 12 stone landing square on the top of my head and bouncing, doing a somersault, knee and arm landing via rock and chicken wire covered railway sleepers, then coming to a stop facing back up the trail.

I never thought about a half price replacement actually. Upon researching it I'm 3 months outside of the warranty period. Ho hum.

Supercow is right though. I should have been wearing knee and arm protection too. It's not like my local trail is Thetford or anything. :p

Went to cannock yesterday with it being a nice day.

Was planning on doing a video swapping changing views but realized once id got there id forgot the mounts

So ive just put together a full 15 mins of the same view.

What started out as a nice XC ride in decent weather through Glen Feshie in Aviemore ended up in a man vs mountain battle though the elements up to the summit of Carn Ban Mor....
It was without a doubt the most intense experience on a bike yet. Almost zero visibility, wind, cloud and rain at ~2000 feet. Even had to resort to using the compass when we took a wrong turn coming down from the summit to the trail
The climb was hell, the descent was heaven. Pics to follow after I get them uploaded.

It's difficult to compare brake types from one to the other. Even with one manufacturer its difficult. Hope have the mono mini, the M4, the V2 and the X2.

If you were comparing them on a car then master cylinder diameter and the piston size/type (sliding or two/four/six) piston calipers would allow you to compare them like for like. Also have the issue of brake lever length as this will alter the effort required.

The Hope calipers are machined from a single piece of alloy which will reduce flex slightly compared to a caliper that is bolted together. Debatable if you would notice the difference though.

The floating rotors just reduce weight slightly as you can have an alloy bell rather than an all steel piece.

Anyone input all the data into an easy to read spreadsheet (wishful thinking!). At what stage does performance drop off and its just minor weight saving for huge cost increase.

Been thinking about it for a while, and I'm gonna buy a Garmin Edge 500. Is it worth getting a cadence sensor? I've found:

Unit on it's own + 'premier' heart rate monitor = £200

Unit + Standard HRM + Cadence Sensor = £195

Basically, is it worth getting the Cadence sensor over a slightly better HRM? I know what to do with a HRM, I'm less sure of what to do with a cadence sensor.

Cadence data is more useful for road riding than MTB'ing.

Unit + Standard HRM + Cadence Sensor = £195
It's cheaper here : http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/2337/garmin-edge-500-heart-rate-monitor---speed-cadence : £190

Basically, is it worth getting the Cadence sensor over a slightly better HRM? I know what to do with a HRM, I'm less sure of what to do with a cadence sensor.
All HRM's supply the same data, it's only the design that differs and it's objective as to whether this makes any difference to comfort.

Awesome. We could quite possibly be riding that in a few weeks.

I see what u did there

Brake TYPES!

Bike Radar had an excellent article showing various brakes power in the dry and in the wet. They missed an opportunity to expand on the article with rotor designs, brake pads, and overall feel of the brake (e.g. bite point).
