Hey,
I've just been invited and signed up to a Mazda track day at Silverstone on the 24th Aug (there are other dates and locations), has anyone been / going?

Looks like you get to drive their mx-5 and mazda3 mps under tuition which should be pretty cool.

I think its cause I entered the competition they are running their home page at the moment :)

Cheers
Sam

I entered the competition last week, and an invitation to the trackdays dropped in my inbox this morning. :)

They are doing Knockhill, Croft, Oulton, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, and Castle Coombe.

Ive just got my invitation to this, for Oulton Park on 27th September@12noon, just wondering how it went for you Mr Siliconslave?

hey mate, it was really good, gave me a real thrust to do more trackdays although i'm not sure i'd drive my car as fast as they got you to drive the cars :)

You'll get three ~15min sessions, 2 in a mx-5 and 1 in the Mazda3 MPS. They are very different cars to drive, you can really abuse the MPS but the mx5 takes a bit more grace to drive fast.

The one thing i would recommend is trying to get the same instructor for the mx-5 (and avoid the grey haired old guy if possible) as they all have different styles of instructing & driving.

Anyhows, have a great time :)

Thanks for the info, Id been toying with the idea of selling (to my dad) my dedicated BMW 328i track car and replacing it with another MX5, to do that id planned on getting on track in my current MX5 to see how it felt, but, this free day is going to let me see how it feels without the potential damage to my own car. :)

How has it been on track?

The 328i has been very good having done an Airfield, Cadwell and Oulton park in it, it is very predictable when getting towards and beyond the limits of grip, it is just a little heavy. I feel from my on-road experience of the MX5 its a much more nimble car, slower acceleration but, id sure the extra speed it could carry through the corners would give faster times and also be more fun as well... always with the option to add FI into the mix fairly cheaply.

My sister has just been invited to this, she's on the morning session at Oulton on 27th Sept also. My advice would be to avoid her at all costs, she's a proper bimbo hairdresser with an MX-5 Icon, she's scary on the road, so lives will be lost with her on track. Good Luck. :)

What a great day, 3x 15min sessions and then a passenger lap with an instructor at the end of the day. I found the Mx5s were really forgiving and easy to go quick in. Whereas the 2.3 Turbo Mazda3 MPS i didn't get along with, i found myself going really slow into corners, unable to carry much speed or understeering and then quite a bit of lag before the Turbo kicked in and gave its burst of power.

I found the MPS to be a bit more of a challenge, but I felt confident in it by the end of my second run in it.

Had the same instructor both times for the MPS, so that might have helped. He was really pushing me towards the end, and was urging me on to beat the red one in front (left the pits about 1 minute before me)...caught right up over the 7 laps but didn't have time to pass unfortunately!

The MX5 has made me seriously consider buying a mk2 this winter/spring next year. The handling felt incredibly responsive and it was just so effortless around the corners. I agree the MPS was a harder car to drive fast, but I'll be damned if I didn't try my best! :p

My missus was on the Oulton park day this Tuesday just gone, she much preferred the MPS to the MX-5 which i was quite surprised about. But she didn't' like the instructor in the MX-5 atall so maybe that had something to do with it.
