Graduated with a 1st, no job

Most graduate schemes won't let you on without 320 Ucas points, and at least a 2:1.

Then you have go to small company, and get experience in some niche technology thats not going to be of any use in a few years.

I'm contracting(Phoning up various companies for projects to do), using my degree skills in a niche but I doubt there is a bright future.

Strange, might have just gone through a string of bad timing mate.

Sorry to hear of the struggle, I always went for a lower job if I couldn't find work easily. Make it as subtle as possible as to why you are doing this and keep looking whilst in said 'lower paid' job.

At least you are working then.

Ah sorry I didn't explain myself properly. Thanks though!

That was what I went through 3 years ago. I'm actually doing well at the mo, but got there by going to a graduate fair. Got a lot of interviews out of meeting them in person.

So my advice is to go to grad fairs. :)

I hate you, you have a 1st? I got a 2:2, its more or less like NOT HAVING A DEGREE.

fml.

Dont be stupid. I know plenty of people with 2:2's (myself included) with fantastic jobs.

Quite.

212, both panthro and I are special retards with a 2:2 degree and are doing rather well for ourselves in the Oil & Gas industry. KaHn, also a member on here is in the same boat as well.

I'm struggling to even find places to apply to

Insert 10Gigapixel facepalm picture!

Really, a 1st in Engineering and you can't find places to apply. Presuming you have exhausted the small search engine google, graduate employment books and asking people you know?

Yea some ive looked at discount me as I only got 280 points in 3 Alevels even though I got a 1st in (apparantly) the best Uni for my course, which soon turned out to be rubbish. Not sure why I listened to teachers banging on about leeague tables during A levels.

Did you all find jobs before the economy went ***s up though?

You didn't think that a job magically landed in your lap after Uni did you?

That's not OP's fault. Undergraduates are always poorly informed about job prospects/job hunting by career services. Even if they research job market throughly while at uni, they still lack the experience of adult world in particular working world which is harsh and cruel any way.

Only once they leave uni and are on their own in search for work, the harsh reality hits very hard and at times can be a very difficult and frustrating experience for young people who haven't fully understood the ropes. As one poster already mentioned it is easier when everything is laid out for you.

I have been through all of it aswell and would suggest that OP looks at all the options carefully and decide where his interests lie. He should definitely talk to other people about his options, perhaps consulting his former tutors etc for further guidance.

I got a 2:2 at Uni but luckily I had a year at a company in London as a placement.

Came out of Uni, worked in shops for afew months then got a call and went back to my old company and have a total of 2 years experiance there.

Just started a new job in the same industry which should put me over the experiance hump from now on :)

Can be a lot more difficult though given how many people who get 2:1s or higher these days. I knew a few friends who graduated with a 2:2 and seriously struggled to find a job because of it.

Yeah it was harder to get into my current job with the 2:2. I overcame that by taking a pro-active approach. I arranged a pre application tour where I got to know the people I would be working with and people who were going to be on the interview panel. They remembered me and how well we got on, which became the deciding factor in me getting the job.

During the interview I was asked why I had straight A's at A-level and only got a 2:2 at degree. I did have some mitigating issues at uni which was the main reason for my under achievement, I explained this and it seemed to go down well with the panel.

Luckily I did my degree at a good Russell group university, which does carry some weight when compared to people with a 2:1 and above from a non-russell group uni. This may not be true in all cases, but it certainly has been for me.
