Hi there

Does anybody know if the Thermalright True Black 120 CPU heatsink is compatible with the following:

Asus P8P67 PRO Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

I am currently using it on my old system. If not what is the best CPU cooler right now for a i5 2500K to overclock?

Thanks

Michael

That depends.

The revision A only fits on Socket 775 for Intel.

The revision C fits on Sockets 1366/1156/775 for Intel.

The revision C would fit as Socket 1155 uses the same mounting holes as Socket 1156.

The revision A wouldn't fit unless you got one of the Socket 1155/1156 bolt through kits from Thermalright.

If you have a Revision A you could always get one of the ASRock Socket 1155 boards which also have mounting holes for Socket 775 coolers.

Thanks for the reply.

Is there any way I can tell which version I have? The box has no identification that I can see just 'True Black 120'. I know it came with the Chill Factor 2 thermal paste which some sites say was with the 'c' revision. Apart from this I can't see any revision numbers on the boxing or the receipt. There are 6 heat pipes on the cooler.

Thanks

Michael

If you look at the instruction leaflet and it only refers to Socket 775 for Intel then it's revision A.

If it refers to Sockets 775/1156/1366 then it's revision C.

Just to confuse the issue there was apparently a revision B but that doesn't appear on the Thermalright website and only seems to have been a stop gap product.

The revisions B & C have a hole running through the middle of the cooling fins (see below).

The instructions are your best bet though to confirm what fittings you have.

The instruction booklet says Intel Socket 775 only. I was hoping I could use this on a new build as it is a great cooler. Guess I will have to buy a new one.

Thanks for you replies.

You can if you get an ASRock board.

Some (all?) of them have mounting holes for S775 coolers.

This one is highly regarded:

Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

And this is an updated version with PCI-E Gen 3.0 ready for Ivy Bridge:

Asrock Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Credit where its due+you`re quicker on the keys.

I know this might sound daft, but could you not just get a C revision clamp mounting kit.

Like this:

One of those and you can use any S1155 board.

S1156 and S1155 are the same fitting.

Or get an ASRock board with S775 mounting holes and you don't have to buy anything else.
