Dell u2711 *far* too much anti-glare; Hazro HZ27WA the best for programming?

Yesterday my Dell U2711 arrived (from another vendor :) ) which I'd ordered to replace my current 24" LG w2452t (1920x1200). However within 2 hours it was back in it's box and an RMA number requested - the anti-glare coating is *far* too harsh and is sparkle-tastic.

I'm a software engineer working from home and hence spend my days reading lots of text, and for such a supposed high-end and well regarded monitor the anti-glare makes the text far too unclear for me.

I'm hence after another monitor in the same class (IPS, 2560x1440) but without the terrible AG the u2711 suffers from. The Hazro HZ27WA is getting some very good feedback on these forums but I'm a little reluctant to mail-order another monitor without being able to look at it 'in the flesh'.

I've seen the 27" Apple Cinema Display in the local Apple Store and was impressed with it - no fuzzy anti-glare rubbish and text was crystal clear; however it's lack of inputs is a significant disadvantage. The HZ27WA is supposed to have the same LG panel - but is it as clear for text work? I've heard plenty of people using it for games here but not for the sort of thing I want it for.

I'm not worried about reflections as I don't have any lights behind me in my office, but I don't want to have another monitor turn up which actually looks worse than my previous one!

Any input appreciated!

Dave

Also - I've seen some reports that the Hazro displays can emit a bit of a whine with a lot of white displayed - which is pretty much how I operate. It this a widespread design issue or only a fault on some displays?

Thanks

I've been happy with my Hazro now since I got it a few weeks ago.

The people with the WA version haven't had problems with games at all, the same for the WC.

TFT Central have a review of both. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hazro_hz27wa.htm

I find my text to be amazingly clear, considering that's what I look at most of the day.

I also have to state, that I have the Glass version and I don't really notice the reflections/glare at all when working or gaming.

I'm too focussed on the issue at hand.

I've not noticed or heard of this "whine" you're discribing with lots of white though.

On the plus the WA also had plenty of inputs for you to play around with, along with being able to calibrate it unlike the WC version.

Thanks N19h7m4r3, it's good to get the opinion of someone who seems to be using it for a similar purpose as I intend.

The whine was something reported on a couple of posts (e.g. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=19310099&highlight=whine#post19310099) so I was interested if this is an endemic problem.

Another question - will I be able to use the PSU off a 120V (US) mains supply? I'm going to be moving to the US in a few months so it would be good if I was able tog et it working over there.

Hmm, as far as I know Hazro are introducing a dual powerbrick, one for 240 and 120v. You'll best email them directly, as I think they mentioned that they'll sell those directly from their site with the monitor.

Are you sure the fuzziness was not due to the high resolution and screen size?

I have the dell u2410 and I code software - I have no problems with text.

Certiainy a higer res would only make things sharper and better to see. Compared to fuzzy. Otherwise no one would buy large or high res screens.

Nope, it was definitely the anti-glare coating. I had it running in native res (2560x1440) and there was a very obvious 'sparkle' on any light coloured area - so for example instead of a region being pure white it you could see flecks of red/green/blue. I didn't take any photos before I RAM'd it, but it's very noticeable on this model - there are many threads about it.

Some people (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=878149) have even gone as far as modding the display to remove the coating, but I didn't fancy doing that for such a pricy display.

Hi. I am working a lot with text and numbers, and the HZ27WA is great for this type of use. Very clear text and uniform whites. I have the glass version; maybe I would be even happier without the glass. With less reflections you have to care less about control of ambient light. But especially for working with text the reflections are not very disturbing, as you are looking mostly at a bright screen.

Just now the sceen is back to Hazro because of a backlight failure (just stopped switching on).

Cheers - Klaus
