Does anyone have any experience of this. I bought myself a D3100 last weekend and sales guy was trying to flog it to me but I refused at the time saying I would think about it.

Now I've been given about 60-70 pounds of high street vouchers I can use in there, so is worth going back in and getting the insurance, considering it is "anything can happen" accidental etc.

In effect, it will cost me nothing if I use these vouchers. Am I better off sticking it on the house insurance or a specialised insurance policy from someone else?

Any advice greatly appreciated.
(all my spec me a new lens / accessory threads will follow :D )

If your home insurance gives the level of cover you want, you're fine. Jessops will charge you for each item you buy if you want their cover, your home contents insurance won't.

Personally I just use my home insurance, I did have to declare the kit to the insurance company though due to value, but that will depend on your policy, give them a ring if in doubt and ask.

Personally on my D5100 I got an accidental damage policy for 3 years which is the value of the product on the day of purchase, so if it breaks 2 1/2 years time I get £600 back to reinvest in a new camera. Didn't get it from jessops though!

I work at an electrical store, and selling this "insurance" is a big part of the business and i've had it drilled into my head.
When I offer it, a lot of people explain that they have home insurance and its covered, which is fair enough.
I usually counter this by just saying it can be as little as £3.00 a month or, I believe its around £50-60 for 3 years (with this plan you get a proportion of your £50-60 if claimed before the 3 years is over) at the store I work at. Some may say that this is quite expensive and is how a lot of electircal stores make thier money by selling this extra insurance.

But it can be worth it, the insurance covers accesories, worldwide cover (going on holiday?) and has tech support (Not really needed if you know your product), if your product breaks (weather its accidental, or you kick it down the stairs on purpose) you can bring it into store and get a brandnew one, no squabbles. Oh and if you claim on your camera cover and the camera is no longer in production, you will get the upper model or another camera of same/greater value.

These are the benefits i'm trying to highlight, but obvsiously, if you don't think you can benefit from these, by all mean stick to your home insurance. At most electrical stores you are basically forced to mention these insurances to every customer.

Oh and I got the d3100. Absolutely amazing camera, recently got a 35mm f1.8 lens for it which is a must buy! It's amazingly crisp and with a very large aperture, you can get some amazing "Bokeh" effects.

It was the worldwide & "accidental kick down the stairs" that interested me as I go to Canada a fair bit (will be moving there too at some point) and it will cover me while I am there.

Price around
I pay £28 pa for £800 of cover with glover and howe
Well, iirc, they were quoting me £60 for three years of cover which I can pay for with the vouchers I have, so it's effectively free for me.

However, I guess this price is also for just the camera itself and not any subsequent items I purchase for the camera.

I more curious as to whether it really is as good as it sounds, I mean the guy did even say that after about 2 1/2 years, a lot of people "break" their camera and get the brand new latest model no questions under the policy. As if to say it was pretty much expected that I would do that

Well you will have to check what Jessops service plans actually cover. World wide is covered in the store I work at but it may not be covered in jessops.

Well if you bought the kit with the 18-55mm lens, the lens would be covered in the insurance as well.

And regarding the "breaking" after 2 1/2 years, you get 1 or 2 customers who do this, we are in no place to decline you from having your camera replaced but you will have to have that on your conscience if you did do this :P

Just to clarify, this is not something I would do as I do have a conscience, but the salesperson, was pretty much promoting it as the main selling point! I guess he makes his commission now and will most likely be gone by the time that sort of claim was going through.

Don't worry, I didn't mean to imply I thought you would. I hear the odd sales-person mention about this.

Well it's a dog eat dog world :(

The cover from Jessops is ( was in my case) provided by domestic&General. Being one of their repair agents in a previous life I took it.

Knowing how good D&G's customer service was I'm happy to give them my cash. Plus if i scratch my sensor or drop it down the stairs they'll send me a cheque.

The plus point on NOT claiming on household Insurance would be that I would still keep my No claims.

I think Jessops is a repair not replacement automatically dont get these two confused. When I worked for a large electrical retailer people always thought that if they broke a item which was covered under a repair warranty that it would get replaced instantly. Its repair first and then replacement depandant on the policy of course.

Funny enough I just got a camera from them and turned down there warranty but thats mainly based on my experiances working with extended warranties which were terrible. I'm not saying jessops are like this at all just stuck in my ways. Wonder if I made a mistake now haha :p

Com/ixons extended are provided by themselves and are a world away from D&G.

D&G only do insurance.

If I have a problem requiring Insurance I contact D&G only go through jessops for warranty.

I took out the extended warranty for A55, 18-250mm Lens, Sony HX9V and my NX10 and kits before. Mainly I took them for the accidental damage coverage, the HX9V is being used in a Aquapac so that seemed like a good idea and the value of the other kit is such that I just feel happier knowing if I drop or the camera is knocked out of my hands or off a desk at home then its going to get fixed or replaced.

I take it out on every camera I get. Its awesome.

you can break your camera unlimited amounts of times and they will always repair or replace it.

And yeh its a good idea in 2 and a half years time to accidentally drop it. If you do a good job and make it irrepairable you might get the newer model. :)

Also its better than using house insurance as there is no excess and no rate increases.
