Credit Card Claim

on topic, I do have a CC that has travel insurance, it's a Bank of Scotland Gold card, a real old one though so no idea if new ones have this

however the obvious t+c section says, not unreasonably, that the entire trip must be booked on that card

I checked into it and a worldwide annual policy for me and the missus costs £40 ish, so by booking my holidays on a cashback Amex card I get enough to pay for the policy with quite a bit to spare :)

lol Yah I know, I was just responding to OilyM's post saying that credit cards only ever offer insurance to the card holder + family.

Still you did dispute that any card would offer such a package. I suppose when buying a car second user you can go for models which used to be really expensive and act as if you actually have the money to drive it.

Just scanning the small-print of the Gold Account cover and it appears that he is covered:

The death, Bodily Injury or illness of:
a) You
b) any person with whom You are travelling or have arranged to travel with

I get the same sort of cover with my NatWest Advantage Gold account.

Thank you for backing me up. Time for someone to wipe egg off their face.

So how does it work then? Do they refund the entire trip even though his friend is still able to go?

You.

That doesnt mean what it thinks it means.

It means if you and me kiss and make up and book a trip around the world together, and I have a Lloyds Gold Account, and the day before we go, your arms and legs fall off, I can not go on the trip, and the insurance will cover my costs.

ie: The death or injury of a travel partner is grounds for the policyholder to cancel and make a claim. It doesnt mean the insurer will meet the travel costs of the travel partner as well!

They wont cover your costs. Because you are not covered.

you should think about taking out a RBS or Natwest card as you travel quite a lot the Free priority pass makes it worth it alone, the insurance cover is very good, you get free green flag cover, free home emergency cover (i have claimed on this once), and a bunch of other free stuff.

You can also use the whites concierge free which is quite useful at times.

Fee is 250 pounds per year.

Btw Dr House, you quoted 'Travel Accident Insurance' NOT 'Travel Insurance'.

Travel Accident Insurance covers you and your guests if you have an accident WHILST travelling. So if you crash your hire car, or whatever. It doesn't cover cancellation of the trip due to a seperate accident occuring before the trip.

Not really relevent though as the OP's mate doesnt have this card anyway.

He just has a Gold current account, which doesn't extend cover to mates of the policyholder.

Yes the NW one does seem rather appealing. Thanks for bringing that one up House.

looking at the NW one, the travel insurance is worth about 40 to me, lounge acces is something I spend about 100 ish a year on

is there a min earning amount for this ?

actually if you have to book your hols on this card then I will lose about 150 in cashback I get from amex

Yep I was trying to decide between the NW and the Amex, in the end I took the natwest because I think it was a little cheaper and some of the benefits were better.

I did take out the virgin black amex which I should really cancel now because I I wanted the points. I used it to pay for my honeymoon and a entire hotel we booked for our family for a week during my wedding.

So now I have lots of "free" accompanying passanger vouchers and free upgrades from economeny but you have to buy a over priced seat in the first place to use them:rolleyes:

The travel insurance policy is a lot better then other ones so its worth a bit more, our bags got delayed before the wedding and they said they would pay out upto 2k per person. Luckily we did not need to claim in the end but its nice to know we could if we need it.

minimum earning is 75k I think but to be honest I don't think the enforce. 60 up and it should be fine.

Useful elements from the Terms and Conditions of the Lloyds Gold Current Account Travel Insurance:

Section A – Cancellation
or curtailment charges
and early return.
What is covered.
We will pay You up to £5,000 (inclusive of any valid claim payable under Section K
– Ski pack) for any irrecoverable unused travel and accommodation costs (including
excursions up to £250) and other pre-paid charges

As we can see, it says we will pay 'You'. 'You' is defined in the policy documentation as meaning:

You/Your/Yourself/Insured Person

in the case of a Single Account; the Gold Account holder (plus each of their
children aged up to 12 months) and one of the following persons when
travelling with the account holder or a responsible adult:
– the Account holder’s spouse, civil partner or partner;
– or (where there is no spouse, civil partner or partner) one of the Account
holder’s unmarried financially dependent children under the age of 18
in full-time education

Note absence of 'or your mate'.

So, its clear they pay ONLY the policyholder for the policyholders losses.

This is where you are getting confused, as it goes on to give the following as a reason for cancellation:

The death, Bodily Injury or illness of:
a) You
b) any person with whom You are travelling or have arranged to travel

This doesnt mean anyone travelling with the policyholder is covered. It means the policyholder themselves is covered if they cannot travel because somebody they were travelling with cannot travel.

So, your mate is fine. He gets a refund.

You are not fine. You get no refund, because you have no travel insurance.

It really is as simple as that.
