Just as the title says really, i upgraded to Virgin 30meg, but the wireless range is a bit rubbish, could i just use the Superhub as the modem and my old DG834 as the wireless switch/router (not entirely sure which i mean)

If so can anyone point me the direction to get it set up?

If not is there a router switch i could buy to get it working better...

I still have the old modem (Model: E08C013.00 Ambit 256 - i think) and wireless router from when it was only 10megs, could i use those...?

Thanks in advance

Dave

You should be able to use the old modem, which would be best. You'll need to call vm and get the MAC address swapped over though. This may or may not require a call out.

Using the hub as a modem and the DG834 (effectively as a wireless access point) would also work.

  • You just need to connect them together via LAN ports
  • Ideally disable all the routing functionality on the DG834.
  • Disable the DHCP & wireless on the hub and give it a fixed local IP address.
  • Configure the DHCP on the DG834 to point at the hub as the gateway (the fixed IP you assigned in the previous step).

I would go the old modem route if you can though as it’s much tidier.

I was just about to order one of these, as i am looking at getting a HP MicroServer and it would be good for the gigabit ports.

So its not recommended?

If you mean the superhub then no, they're not much good. You're much better off requesting a standard modem and supplying your own router if you have the cash.

Thanks for the reply stretch.

So i should use the old modem AND the old router??

Do you know if the old modem is capable of getting 30megs - the speed in currently on?

ALSO could i just use the old modem and DG834?? Or would it be best to get a new cable router to go with the old modem??

Thanks again

Dave

How old is the old modem?

EDIT: Sorry, you said in your OP. A quick search shows some say it can some say it can't. Most say the Ambit 256 will do up to 40Mb down, but I wouldn't count on it.

Tbh, I'd just call VM and tell them the hub doesn't perform well and you like a replacement modem. If you're happy with your router why change it?

Introducing the hub was a daft idea. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 50Mb service and unless they say they'll provide me with a modem I won't be. I've heard reports that that they no longer supply you with a 50/100Mb modem and you have to take the 'super' hub. If you've paid for your own hi-spec router (and most who want 100Mb have) why would you want to use their rubbish.

Nothing wrong with the superhub, apart from the wireless part of it! The gigabit seems stable enough, and I have had no problems using it as router only. The wireless is very poor though! I use a WRT54-GL with tomato on it for the wireless.

VM are supposedly doing a modem only mode, but again it has been beset by problems, so will probably not appear any time soon.

You could happily use the superhub for your DHCP, and just connect the router you have with the DHCP switched off. Just plug them both in via the lan prots, and do not use the wan.

Mines been terrible. I get random DCs over ethernet. Just randomly drops connection, then works again. Wireless hardly works with my Iphone.

It seens to reset its self once a week for getting all settings. I beleive you can complain enough and get a nonsuperhub.

I too am not a fan of the SouperHub (sic).....had a perfectly nice setup based around a DLink DIR-655, which is now collecting dust....
SH wireless is woeful in many respects (range, featureset), the unit can be moody meaning randomly a few days of reboots then fine for weeks, does not support DDNS, very limited configuration options, no QoS and so on....

I have tried to get my DLink behind the router to run most of the network, turning off more or less everything I can on the SH, but seems to be issues with this combination (and looks like I am not alone).....even with the DLink sat in DMZ :(

Booo to the Souper and roll on the modem only mode, which - excitingly - is now only about 3 months overdue (and counting)

No problem using the DG834 as a wireless access point and a network switch in conjunction with your superhub.

Just turn off DHCP host mode, select 'client' instead. (I assume the superhub is the dhcp host btw).

That's pretty much it... the DG834 should pick up an address and it should act as a switch and let you see the internet :-) (prob need to turn off on the superhub)

Modem mode should be coming fairly soon, I'm running the beta firmware and everything is nice and smooth.

This is me running modem mode using my old Linksys router.

You can do this without contacting VM, It's strait forward enough to put the MAC from your Superhub, Onto you A256 (or 250,255) for that matter.

The ambits will only handle upto about 38-40mb so its fine for the 30mb package.

You need an SPI test clip for the 256, Though the 250,255 can just be done via ethernet.
