Answer: You get attacked, maybe?

This is just silly, folks go and run around where they like and obviously upset a polar bear, then the bear attacks them, they get injured/die and then the bear has to be 'destroyed' too. Totally needless.

Sky News said:
A 17-year-old boy has been killed by a polar bear while travelling with a British tourist group in Norway.

He's been named as Horatio Chapple, who was hoping to study medicine at university.

Four others were seriously injured in the attack - the group's leaders Michael Reid and Andrew Ruck along with two of the participants in the trip, Patrick Flinders and Scott Smith.

They were travelling with the British Schools Exploring Society.

The chairman of the BSES, Edward Watson, said he sent his "utmost sympathy" to the victim's family and that the name of the deceased would not be released until the formal identification process is completed.

They were attacked while on a trip to the Svalbard islands and were part of a larger group of around 80 people.

The victims were staying in a campsite containing 13 people which was attacked by the bear.

A spokeswoman for the governor of Svalbard said explorers usually set up trip wires which fires off a rocket if animals enter the camp.

I agree.

Me and the mrs were discussing this when it was on the news.

Sure, kill it at the time if you can prevent death I can accept. Hunt an endangered species down later for it having the gaul to attack you out in nature?

Hmmmmmm.

In all fairness, they go over there and camp around on the bears front door step and are suprised when it gets hungry and thinks...hmmm, people, nom nom.

Agreed. Why kill the bear? I go shark diving with Bull and Tiger sharks and if I get bitten and subsequently die (very remote as sharks aren't really interested in humans) I don't expect the animal to be hunted down and killed. I realise I am in its territory and am fair game.

That's a bit damning of the guys involved isn't it? What's to say that the polar bear didn't just run up to them and throw a wobbly?
