Why do Londoners think they are separate from the rest of England?

this.

Everyone I know who's visited London has said it's the best place they've been to!

Probably because London is a settlement on a scale otherwise unmatched in the UK. London is an absolutely fantastic city and one of the few true 'world cities' - a candidate for the capital of Earth, if there ever was one. It's therefore no surprise that London is very London-centric, because generally speaking, it has everything.

Really? I've lived in Barbican for the past year and can say I prefer my hometown of Cwmbran. I will be living there for another five years so maybe I'll change my tone. Living and visiting are two different things though. I don't plan to live in London much past the first two years of graduating.

Z1-2? Where there are very few houses, let alone residential areas? London is all the way up to Z6 chap.

Single person on £40k could manage £300k house.

But why would a single person need/want a £300k 3-bed house? ;)
Yes, where there are few houses. Single person on £40k could not manage a £300k house unless he has a £150k deposit.

I suggested a three bed because that's a typical family home. For a couple to buy a nice three bed in Camden (a £500k house) they will need to earn a decent combined wage.

London might go up to Z6 but it's sort of pointless considering it when it takes an hour to get to the west end. I can get there in almost the same time and I live in Essex!
PMKeates and DJ_Jestar have just perfectly illustrated why your expectations of what constitutes a nice area or a decent quality of life are a huge factor in whether living in London is attainable for sensible money :p
Yes, exactly, we've illustrated that my standards are significantly higher than his :p

A typical family home. For a single occupant. Riiiiiight.

Where there are few house, so naturally will be more expensive, aka ignoring the stuff that rebukes your argument. Riiiiight. London is not Z1-2, it all the way to Z6. Going to ignore this again?

I know of several people paying £220k-£300k mortgages on their own, all earning <£50k.

This is the case with every capital city that I have had experience with. Dublin in Ireland might as well be another country (it was for a long time, wiki 'The Pale'), Parisians are a completely different race of people to most french that I know. Generally I get on with french from outside paris but any parisians tend to be stuck up female genitalias. London is no different, though the people here aren't stuck up for the most part. It is a very different type of living then most of the rest of the country and yes there is definitely a feeling of being separate.

I never mentioned a single occupant.

I'm not ignoring it, I've addressed it.

Today you will not get a mortgage for £300k on a salary of say £40k. It's simple fact.

I think you are being overly defensive of your lower quality of life expectations.

I live in Z3 currently, takes me 20mins to get to town. Have lived in all zones except 1&2, and it never took more than 40mins to get to town.

I'm sat here thinking you want your cake and want to eat it. You have ludicrously high expectations fella.

Again, this totally depends on your expectations. I earn pretty well for my age (more than the figures you've quoted), live at home with my parents for free, yet do not consider myself particularly wealthy and seek a greater disposable income.

You're not seeking a great disposable income because you have 50k disposable (before tax)! :o

You quoted Penge, Crystal Palace etc. It takes more than 40 minutes in pure train travel alone. There are <£300k pile of crap houses in the worth-living-in areas of London.

Single person paying the bills does not equal single occupant. Maybe I do have high expectations, does that make my opinion any less valid? You started not by telling me you disagree, but by telling me that I was wrong.

Funny, my Sister and her boyfriend live in Penge at the moment. 20min train ride and they are in the city for work.

Anyone that can get a £500k mortgage will not want to live in Camden anyway, that's a £120K salary or so these days right?

Camden Town or Camden borough?

Fair enough, obviously not everyone is a fan of big cities like London. Personally I love living here and I don't see myself moving anytime soon.
