Sure, kill it at the time if you can prevent death I can accept. Hunt an endangered species down later for it having the gaul to attack you out in nature?

This was an avoidable tragedy and because of slipshod precautions people and a polar bear are now dead.

My wife just informed me that we know the family of the boy who died. In light of this I won't be commenting further.
Shame the bear had to die but then I s'pose if it had been my son I'd have got my rifle out.
