Question: What happens when you set up camp in the middle of polar bear territory?

Shame the bear had to die but then I s'pose if it had been my son I'd have got my rifle out.
Stupid people going to camp where Polar bears hang out though.

I agree.

Me and the mrs were discussing this when it was on the news.

Sure, kill it at the time if you can prevent death I can accept. Hunt an endangered species down later for it having the gaul to attack you out in nature?

Hmmmmmm.

The problem with bears (I assume Polar Bears are the same) is that they will begin to hunt humans after getting a taste for them. It is why a bear will always be put down if it attacks a human even if further contact in the bears normal environment is unlikely.

The bear will intentionally target human populations so the risk is too great.

This serves as a lesson to people who take nature and the inherent risks especially in regions such as Svalbard lightly. Also what were the organisers thinking of, no warning perimeters or lookouts?

This was an avoidable tragedy and because of slipshod precautions people and a polar bear are now dead.

I agree with this completely. I feel sorry for the lad killed since it was poor planning on the planners/guides part and failing to see the dangers that they may face and how they could have combated them.

Well apparently it was an isolated incident because polar bears don't normally come near humans (in that area) and the last time it happened was 1995.

Why didn't they have any sort of guns is beyond me, even to just shoot in the air.

Any sort of danger to human life then there is nothing wrong with shooting it.

Don't they normally use an electric fence around these campsites?

yes and some sort of way of keeping them out but olar bears will track and kill you .

was a great documentry about two guys who set up trip wires failrs alsorts the polar bear got through all of them and attacked the man while a sleep

clever girl :p

This just annoys me. CAMP in polar bear territory and think you're safe? Idiotic people. Yes sad but just idiotic.

Edit: sorry Castiel.

You go rock climbing and fall to your death (because you chose to be hangin' off a mountain y0)

Do you expect the mountain to be blown away for the audacity of being tall and rocky? Poor bear :(
