ADVICE NEEDED: To buy or to build?

I'll need to start looking at a broader set of benches I think. From Stulid's link, OCZ 850W for £30 less should do the job.

And the reason I suggested another motherboard - http://www.markljlewis.com/stupidmsi.jpg

Stupid MSI.

Was not aware of this, one of my work colleagues is about to get a rig next week with that board and want's SLI so will be steering him elsewhere. Was advised here actually to get the GD53, not by Stulid though, was when he was on holiday :p

Thats a GTX480, anything smaller in length is ok, but a GTX580 is the same sort of length.

That system pre-built would cost you around 1.5k.
But do you trust yourself with expensive parts? If not then you should start with a smaller build like I did :) mainly because I broke a stick of RAM xD

You broke a stick of RAM? I have to ask... how?

Building a PC is like giant lego. Just don't poke any of the silver or gold bits, and you should be fine.

build, if nothing else for the experience and to see how it all fits together

its not difficult at all

and there is loads of help on the forums if you get stuck

Usually the motherboard will come with 2 SATA cables, no harm in having a few spare either. It's also hit and miss whether the PSU will come with a kettle lead so again nothing wrong with having a spare.

I'm trying to find out the lengths of the PSU cables in case you need extensions, the case isn't overly big so it shouldn't be a problem tbh. If someone else could confirm this? The case takes 290mm cards and the 580 is ~260mm so it will fit fine. Trying to think if there's anything I've missed.

EDIT* Will need 3 SATA cables so will need to get atleast one unless you have some spare from another machine.

The case comes with an EPS12V extension cable, which might come in handy depending where the power cpu socket on motherboard is. My Dokker did`nt, had to wait 2 days to get one.
If you run into difficulties, at least you`re in the right place for help. Good luck.

If you go with the OCZ psu, i got the 600 Modxstream. It came with 1 kettle lead, 4 power leads, 2 6Gb/s, 2 3Gb/s and 2 gpu power leads all in a handy pouch. More than enough.

Just to throw a cat amongst the pidgeons I have been doing some thinking.

I read in the GPU section that the next generation of cards are expected in the new year and I thought maybe a GTX 580 was not a smart choice.

I could get a GTX 470 SLI or ATI 6950 Crossfire setup that would out perform the GTX 580 for less/same sort of money.

That way if I decided to upgrade next year I could get a better card for my monies.

Im usually anti ATI but im seeing some good results on AnandTech.

Your thoughts please! :)

Haha yes I know but there might be new cards with more bang for buck at the GTX 580 level was all I am thinking.

To be honest I am more than happy to go for a 580 as I have been thinking about building a machine with a 580 in for about 3 months now and it was only today I considered getting something different

Ok so I have waited a few days and still not too sure what to go for but after reading a lot of stulids posts on other threads I have changed the mobo.

What I now have so far is:

MSI GeForce GTX 580 OC Twin FrozR II 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £371.99

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £161.99

Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £159.98

Corsair Force Series 3 120GB SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (CSSD-F120GB3-BK) £147.98

Lepa G-Series 900W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £134.99

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £79.99

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £53.99

Zalman Z9 Plus Tower Case with Fan Controller - Black £44.99

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £40.99

Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £25.99

Sony Optiarc AD-5260S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.98

Total (including Shipping): £1,253.87

The only thing that im looking at possibly changing now is possibly the case for a better one (not sure which)

Is the case big enough to add a watercooler at a later date if I decide to?
