Another US gun rampage (in Ohio)

Yeah just like banning guns here in the UK completely eradicated gun crime.

quite a short-sighted position to take, firearm deaths in the USA are about 30 times more per 100,000 population than the UK

if you make the possession of firearms illegal, the use of firearms goes down - simples :p

Do you think you might be able to provide some evidence for that?

Gun crime in the UK has always been extremely low, comparatively speaking, even before the 1997 Firearms Act. However it is noteworthy that in the decade following the introduction of this stricter gun control the number of incidents of firearms related injuries more than doubled in England and Wales: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/6372717.stm

You can't really say it means anything, at least not on such face value. The increase in gun crime may be due to the increased prevalence of gangs and drugs trafficking in the UK rather than a direct result of the banning of firearms.

I honestly don't know, but the idea that a ban has been the direct cause of increasing firearm injuries just doesn't seem to logically follow - I imagine it's more of a social issue.

well lets just put it this way, it is legal in some states to own pretty much any kind of gun, machine/pistol/big mahoosive ones that could blow up a tank.....seen a few vids of people in america showing off with them on youtube, and in england....well its pretty much just shotguns that are allowed to be held legally with a licence, and those are a bloody nightmare to get a licence for according to a farmer i know, whereas america......waaaaay too easy to buy guns over the counter

The ban may have decreased non-organised crime firearm incidents.

I agree with you entirely and I could speculate on both the problems and merits of gun control.

My point is that simply stating that an entire nation of people are ''idiots'' just because they don't agree with strict gun control laws is not a clever thing to do.

Additionally I think that stating that tighter gun control laws are universally better for all societies is equally as naive.

because the government wont ban them due to gun toting idiots complaining about their civil right to have a firearm

Yeah gee, imagine that; law abdiding people complaining that people want to restrict their pre-existing civil rights..."idiots".

Has anybody here ever compared the US crime rates between states? Rather that just saying "America has lots of gun crime hurrrr!" The US isn't a monolithic legal system, and you'll find that the urban areas, and States like California, that have tight restrictions on ownership have higher gun crime rates than rural areas, and States with more liberal gun laws, especially if those states permit concealed carry!

look....at the end of the day, they are designed for killing, nothing more nothing less, so why have them around?

But why does that make them stupid, why would increasing gun control now necessarily make the situation better and is it not possible that all that you achieve is to take guns away from law abiding citizens that want to protect themselves?

There are plenty of stories about people protecting themselves and their loved ones from intruders because they had access to guns like this one http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/12/09/earlyshow/main5949873.shtml

I am not saying that I am in favour of guns for everyone, just that it is not as black and white as you seem to want to make it.

Although true, gun crime is still very popular in countries where guns are completely illegal.

Criminals tend not to want to sell to these kinds of nutters though because it will lead back to them.

Like Norway for example. Banning guns wouldn't change a thing. .

You mean Norway where it's perfectly legal to own, shotguns, semi auto rifles and handguns, and all 3 of those weapons held legally by a person were used in Norway recently by a certain mass murderer?

Interestingly he couldn't get the weapons he wanted illegally so he got a license and bought them legally.
