I totally agree with the sentiment, but as one of the people interviewed on the BBC said earlier, the last time they tried force they got totally and publicly ripped to shreds for it.

OK, it's a different situation, but why take the risk? As far as the boots on the ground are concerned going in batons out risks a serious injury to one of those idiots who'll inevitably take legal action. Being a lot more cautious leads to damaged property and the force getting ripped to bits politically, but no repercussions for them personally...

Because the police have been pussified over the last couple of decades - they haven't a clue how to deal with proper violent protests. Sure they can deal with football crowds and protesting students, but not this - and the senior officers seem to be hiding.

These gangs have rules that are followed to the letter - why? Respect, they know it's important. Yet respect for authority has been allowed to be eroded over the course of time. A blind eye has been turned until now because it didn't threaten the establishment directly, only the small people who have to live in these ghastly places.
