Unfounded speculation. Using tear gas/water cannon will highly likely antagonise the protesters. Yes, it may send a few home but the anger of the others will easily replace them and more. It's a very dangerous gamble and we should think long and hard before using it. You seem to believe it's a quick fix, it isn't. It will likely be the equivalent of pouring petrol onto a fire.

What? Don't hit them hard in case we upset them?

Just saw some guy get smacked to the floor by a police officer on Sky news, the best thing I have seen all week, that will teach the dirty inbred ****s who think they are above the law.

Yeah, I posted about that earlier, how good it was with that baton to his face. Just recorded it on my phone in front of the TV but missed the smackdown part. If I can manage to record it whenever they run it again, which might not be for another couple of hours, I'll put it on youtube.

its quite simple, just like at work you have a chain of command. the police have tried their best and cant handle all the riot pushes (understandably) so get the big daddy in (army) to sort them out and show them whose boss.

Read this earlier:

The owner of a 100-year family business destroyed in a huge blaze has told Sky News of "lives destroyed."

A huge blaze gutted furniture business Reeves in Croydon, south of London, which was torched on Monday night as violence spread across the capital.

Owner Trevor Reeves told Sky News: "It has just provided my family and the 15 or 20 staff and families that were supported, it's just completely destroyed.

"Words fail me. It's just gone, it's five generations. My father is distraught at the moment. It's just mindless thuggery."

His brother Graham added: "Our lives are destroyed, it will probably be someone else next week. It's horrendous, 35 years I have been down here."

He said the business was established in 1867, but he now had "nothing."

He added: "Everything is just gone, we have just got nothing left. I was in the Brixton riots but this is worse. My life is destroyed."

Hence why the police haven't been able to do anything. They are incredibly outmanned, ill equipped and the equipment they do have doesn't go far enough.
You can't seriously expect a small force to contain such a large, fluid and angry crowd? These people aren't turning up in front of Parliament to protest. They aren't within one area trying to get in (if they were, water cannon may be appropriate) they are running amok all over the place. We don't have the numbers to contain them and therefore attacking them is only going to put the few officers we do have into danger and remove them from the front line. To do that is frankly stupid.
People seem to think that the police are supermen and could easily contain this. They can not. Attempting to do so will injure officers, people, and cause further issues.

stop calling them protesters.

Perfect chance for British government to deploy and test out lrad (Long Range Acoustic Device's)

The Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) is a crowd control and distance hailing device developed by LRAD Corporation to send messages, warnings and deterrent tones over longer distances than normal loudspeakers.

According to the manufacturer's specifications, the systems weigh from 15 to 320 pounds (6.8 to 150 kg) and can emit sound in a 30° beam at 2.5 kHz.[1] LRAD's largest system at maximum level can emit a warning tone of 153 dBSPL measured at 1 meter while the smallest system can reach 137 dB measured at 1 meter.[citation needed]

LRAD systems are used by maritime, law enforcement, military and commercial security companies to send instructions and warnings over distances, and to deter aggressors. LRAD is also used to deter wildlife from airport runways, wind and solar farms, nuclear power facilities, mining and agricultural operations and other industrial facilities.
