With the looting going on it has really highlighted to me how much crap people talk. Since it is an amplification of real life it simply becomes gossipy scaremongering crap.

With a seach of "purley" yesterday, people claiming Tesco Purley had burnt down, then someone posted a picture and saying it all calm and empty... then someone tweeted again "Tesco Purley is burnt to the ground !!!1111".

I know this isn't anything new but it is diluting the quality of Twitter, especially since spam is on the rise also. I retweeted a Harry Potter joke a few weeks ago and within minutes someone had followed and PM'd me some spam.

I guess it depends who you follow and searching a generic term exposes the tardness.

While there might be a lot of BS on twitter, it has proved more than useful to me during the riots. It's been way ahead of Sky/BBC for news, pictures and videos.

These riots have provided a stage for the attention whoring hipsters to try and 'become journalists' and desperately try and get followers. They'll say anything.

It's a shame because there is good information on Twitter and it does serve a purpose but it's mostly full of absolute idiots.

This tbh...

I wanted to know what was going on in my area I could instantly check twitter on my iphone - had been checking earlier today and checked it on my iphone on the train home..

I could quite easily post there is some trouble in Hereford, even though there isn't and cause all sorts of panic.

it's a double sided blade, the biggest selling point of twitter is that breaking news can spread so quickly, but that same capability means that rumours spread just as quickly

Indeed, like last night people saying "omgzzzzz it all kickin off in leedz, pigs evrywere!!!!!"

No... I think you'll find it's Leeds v Bradford in Carling cup that's why the police are there.
