I'm afraid it is relevant, because if footballers are the only sort of role model to these boys what do you think happens to them if they aren't good at football? The number of boys who are good enough to play football professionally is a tiny percentage of the total population. For those who aren't, it's considerably more difficult to get out of the ghetto.

what happens to them if they aren't good at football? then they find something else they are good at...

Blank canvas's and all that. On a serious note though past building legislation and social housing schemes are in part responsible for current issues. Tightly packed housing with little or no amenity space, with little or no community focal areas (shops, churches etc) can often lead to a feeling of detachment and isolation. Having pride in where you live joes some way towards you respecting and treating it well.

absoloutely. bring someone up in a rat-run built in the 70's and it's easy to see where the crime mindset is created. i remember visiting a housing estate in wales that was essentially a rat-run and it really effected me, made my head spin and i was only there for 1 day.

Those who said bring in the army, do you still believe that is necessary given that London was relatively quiet last night with extra boots on the ground ?

A good point, but its also a good point that the trouble moved elsewhere (due to bobbies being drafted into London perhaps?);)

but it's taken too long to get to that, i think that's the point. should've obtained more power on saturday. catching something early is always the best way is it not? i know it comes down to resources but it's taken way too long to get to this.

Apparently there was Confusion in Tottenham this morning as the rioters who torched a post office at the weekend, turned up wanting to collect their benefits.

Im sorry but just no...this should have been caught YEARS AGO.

But oh no, just ignore the thugs, give em some money, nothing will happen.

Ken Livingston blaming cuts again on Sky News

I think you ignore the effects of spending cuts at your own peril. It's not like the Conservative's weren't warned that their planned spending cuts would cause unrest - the leader of their coalition partners warned them before the election.
