Can I fit a TRU120 on a s1155?

Planning to upgrade in 2 weeks' time and I'm trying to be a bit of a cheapskate and save £30 on a heatsink! :p I bought a very nice, very hefty TRU120 when I set up this s775 rig I'm on now, and it has served me well and loyally, so I don't wish to part with it! :p

Truth is, I don't mind spending a few quid on a new HSF, but I bought a Titan Fenrir when i set up my dad's new rig about a month ago and I was not impressed with it at all - there were quite spacious gaps between the copper baseplate and the heatpipes, the fins were absurdly large and I had to spend half an hour with pliers and a hacksaw before it'd fit because the mobo's chipset and mofset heatsinksgot in the way, and the whole thing felt really light. By contrast, my old TRU120 has a smoothly-machined base, a relatively svelte profile (as tall but nowhere near as wide!), and has a nice, solid heft to it when I weigh it in my hand. So as I'm not planning to sell this rig on (except maybe in parts), why not keep and reuse?

I notice that most HSFs on sale on this site are suitable for different sockets - I'm guessing they just come with different mounting brackets for each one like the Fenrir came with. So the question is, can I get a mounting bracket that'll let me use this ancient s775 TRU120 on a s1155? Or maybe make one myself? (only if it's simple though, I think making a mould and pouring molten metal into it is way beyond my skills!) Or is this a fool's errand, in which case I'll just use this as a £30 paperweight?

You should be able to get a mount kit for the TRUE, I upgraded mine from socket 1366 to AM3 socket, just a case for searching around.

If you look for a replacement mounting kit remember that S1156 has the same fitting as S1155 so if it says either of those it'll be fine.

The alternative is to buy one of the S1155 ASRock motherboards which have mounting holes for S775 coolers. You'd have to check the particular models.

ASRock have a pretty good rep. these days. They're owned by Asus.

The S1156 bolt through kit for the thermalright ultra series should work fine on a s1155 board since they use the same mounting system/sizes.

I recently bought a Thermalright silver arrow that comes with s1156 mounts and it fit perfectly on a s1155 P67 board.

Cool, that's good to know, now it's just a question of finding the right bracket when the time comes! :)

Link to it on the Thermalright site.

Id suggest trying to source the rev B version, much better than the standard x style s775 fitting. Still a very good cooler, used to have one on the rig in sig. Shouldnt cost much more than 7-8 quid, as thats round what i paid for a 1366 rev B bracket for mine.

Hmm... not sure that's the one - is the TRU120 in the "Ultra" series? I _think_ the one I've got is this one, although it doesn't look quite like that. Also, I notice that under "support" it lists only s775 and AM2/3 - but surely it'll be fine on Sandybridge CPUs too since they would run cooler than a Core 2 Quad, right?

Heres a pic of the rev B bracket id reccomend.

TRUE means thermalright ultra extreme, originally it was designed for s775 and am2/3, new brackets were released for the new cpu sockets, hence how i was able to keep it and use it on my 1366 board after buying a new bracket. A fantastic cooler, i replaced mine with a prolimatech super mega, bit of a daft upgrade tbh, temps were virtually identical, but the super mega was slightly larger. I found the rev B bracket to be far better to fit, and more secure than the standard x shape.

Excellent, I thought TRUE was an acronym but I wasn't entirely sure, that's why I asked:) I'm pretty sure I have the non-extreme version though (plain TRU), but the one listed in their catalog looks almost identical so I'm sure it'll fit.

And I agree about the brackets, my dad's Fenrir had a non-fixed X-shaped one and it was utter hell to fit!
Now the only question is to find a place that stocks these things... GOOGLE SEARCH AWAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!

googling "thermalright lga1156 btk" should get you there pretty quick.

Shame OCUK doesn't sell this bolt through kit, just a LGA 1366 version.
