Don't park in the emergency services lane

I know this is the M1, and it doesn't use the system where you can drive on the shoulder, but:

What happens if it was a motorway that allows the hard shoulder to be used as a traffic lane during peak times?

If the accident occurred causing people to be "trapped" in whatever lane they were in, what would be the law's view on this?

By the way, I think the whole hard shoulder being used as a "normal lane" thing is utterly stupid for exactly this reason.

I've wondered this too. I imagine the gantry signs would direct motorists out of the hard shoulder, if they took any notice would be a differing matter though!

Or indeed if you a) aren't in view of a gantry, or b) have nowhere to go due to sheer volume of vehicles around you.

Had to turn down the audio but why did so many people park up on the hard shoulder? After all it's not the normal thing to do is it? You know, traffic ahead, now standstill, let me move onto the hard shoulder?

Because they're clueless, selfish idiots who have no concept of the law. There was an accident up ahead so if any emergency vehicles needed access they can't because the hard shoulder is blocked.

Bit odd how so many went in the hard shoulder. I have been in dozens of stand stills on the M1 and never seen anything like that.

If there is no reasoning behind it, i hope they do get a letter through the post.

They're were trying to get off at the next exit. Presumably when they moved onto the hard shoulder traffic on it was still moving.

Why is the bloke referring to it as "the emergency services lane" and not "the hard shoulder"?
