Someone I know's missues has thrown away all their food expenses receipts for last week, only for them to get an email last night saying they have been spot checked and require them all to be faxed to the agency they work for on Monday. These are not paid as an expense, just taken off their tax liability.

What would would one do in this situation?

There’s not a great deal you can do tbh. He’s not going to be able to provide them so I would imagine he’ll have to retract the expense claim. Unless they will accept a bank statement.

jsut knock up your own recepits cut them into receipt sizes, tape several of your cut outs to an A4 sheet then scan the sheet and bin the original fake,...

make the scan a low quality one jsut good enough to see the figures,

and for gods sake MAKE SURE YOU ADD UP THE FIGURES CORRECTLY.. and vat lol...

not that I do this all the time... :)

an original fake real looking expence claim!

I think some knock ups are in order.

Bank statements are no good all paid for in cash.

They are not direct expenses receipt for the employer they work for as they work for an agency and it is a deal with the agency, not the actual company they work for.

These are just for a tax deductable benefit. Also appears that the office who deal with this is not local to the area where he agency is (National agency) so will have no idea regarding local shops etc.

They are bricking it as it now transpires that their receipt keeping has been pretty lax over the last few months as well. Have asked them to ask friends / relatives to see if they have any localish receipts for foodstuffs last week.

What is the worst that can happen? Refund?

Don't do this.

Don't do this either.

Someone needs to speak to the Agency and ask what their procedure is, it will certainly not be a new thing for them to deal with.

But yeah, the fraud angle? Try and steer clear of that. It's not a great look when (not if) you get caught out.

Luckily all my work-related expenses are paid on a dedicated personal credit card - so the couple of times I've lost or misplaced receipts, they've accepted a print-out of my statement, which shows the correct date, price and store/restaurant.

I actively avoid anywhere that is cash only - mainly because I then have to pay it out of my pocket, with a credit card I never notice the money gone.

If you mean you need the reciepts for an umbrella company pm me and I'll give you some advice. I am an expert :)

Sent a trust.

Here is a thought. Say my friend goes to their local shop, which is totally independent and sells all manner of lunch foodstuffs.

Ask to buy £50 of food, but need the receipts broken down into 5 each on a different date. Pasties in the freezer. Bingo!

Sounds good. Don't just commit fraud yourself, get an innocent local business owner to put their livelihood on the line as well! ;)
