good afternoon.

im hoping this is in the correct section ,

im looking at going into the 3d route. sounds simple but for me nothing is haha

currently i have

MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Dirt3 PC Game

right now i know Nvidia have a lovely kit that seems to do a good job, now i have been told ill need a an Nvidia graphics card for this .

ive thought about just going down amd's 3d route but heard very little on that and how well it performs.

any one got an suggestions , is it viable with that graphics card, what graphics card would be a better idea, will over clockers have a monitor and glasses i can get ( have looked but may have missed something .

ive done a lot of research into this but im now bogged down with facts figures etc and would like some one with a fresh eye / experience to lend a hand haha,

any advice is appreciated

thanks all

James

Have you actually used 3D much yourself?

If you actually want a well supported, properly working setup there is no alternative atm to going for a full nVidia system.

However I pretty much guarantee even if it works fine for you (I only find a small number of people have problems with headaches/eye strain, etc.) that after the initial novelty has worn off you will rarely/never use it again as most games are just far more convenient and fluid/precise to play in normal 2D gaming mode.

+1 to the above,

120Hz HDMI 1.4 monitors like the samsungs do work with AMD graphics cards like HD 6950 in 3D (though you need to buy some middleware like IZ3D or Tri Def).

That said, these monitors can only support 3D at 1080p@24Hz (per eye) or 720p@60Hz (per eye) and the monitors are very expensive compared to the dual-link DVI monitors used by Nvidia 3D. As well as being cheaper, the dual-link DVI 120Hz monitors used by the nvidia system (like this one) display full 1080p@60Hz per eye- so the 3D experience should look better (more detailed image). Another thing in favour of the Nvidia 3D system is that it is an integrated package - the glasses, timing hardware, GPU, GPU drivers and 3D driver profiles are all made by Nvidia - so generally work together as they should and are regularly updated.

With the superior quality of the Nvidia 3D system and the big extra cost of a HDMI 1.4 3D monitor (which is required for AMD's 3D system) then replacing your graphics card with an Nvidia one is probably the best option if you have your heart set on 3D gaming.

However, to echo Rroff's post, have a good long test of a 3D gaming system before you invest the money and effort into going to 3D. As you are more than likely to set it aside after the novelty has worn off and/or start getting headaches. Also, if you are not playing super-fast competetive FPS games then you may want to consider going for a nice quality IPS panel monitor instead of a 3D system - really nice image quality and that novelty really doesn't wear off.

ok so , i watch many dvds i play on starcraft mainly...

im in 2 minds about it really id really like to try it....

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-091-LG&groupid=17&catid=1851&subcat= was looking at that to be honest.

i dont think i have a way of going and trying 3d, however i like 3d in movies etc.
its either get another of the monitors i have samsung b24.. OR having a go at 3d. . .

ill have to sell my gfx if i went nvida, and nvida seem a more sensible route.

http://3dvision-blog.com/

a great resource for all things 3D vision, some good detailed reviews of 3D monitors and other 3D hardware. I found it very useful before I took the plunge earlier this year and got a benq xl2410t, evga 570sc & of course the vision glasses kit it self with the transmitter.

forgive me which is the better, im so used to amd i havn't a clue about nvidia cards...

also will running both screens in non 3d mode be fine off the same card? one would have say msn / itunes usual stuff and the other a movie ?

The GTX 480 is a faster card than the GTX 570 - but it is an older card so less easy to get hold of and it is also a good deal hotter and louder (unless you find one with a good custom cooler pre-installed).

On balance the GTX 570 is probably your best bet.

You can happily run two monitors in non-3D mode off an Nvidia graphics card like a GTX 570 without much issue. As for when it is in 3D mode - i'm not sure.

trofeo, do you still use the 3d a lot ? would you say itsworth it etc?

Initially I *loved* it, but do use it less now the novelty has worn off a bit.

Films:
I have tron 3D bluray to watch sometime, I've seen the first few mins and the 3D was really well done. I've also watched avatar and despicable me, avatar was fantastic really enjoyed that in 3D. There are not that many good films in 3D still the vast majority I watch are not, but there are a few I want to get like resident evil and there are more films that look good due for release. Still a bit early days for films overall, simply not than many.

Games:
Played through mafia 2 in 3D with near full settings and it was amazing (using my old 9800gtx+ for physx as it was rather demanding). I dont have as much time as I'd like for gaming so havent tried that many new games still. Many older and offten unratted games have been simple FANTASTIC, flatout 2 in particular, I've spent more time with the 3D playing that than anything else, it's a great laugh with some mates online. Have used it for various other games as well including halflife2 (still not finished it :D) portal 2 was very good in 3D except one tiny area were it was buggy, and I mean tiny u spend all of 10 seconds there.

Overall yes I'm glad I got it, I could have saved some money by not bothering but then you could say that about the would computer :D I've had plenty of good times with it so yes, worth it imo :)

/essay :D

I'll add my $0.02, I guess.

I haven't used the 3D as much as I'd like to. The glasses were uncomfortable, although not so bad now I'm used to them (I do have a big head though :D).

Mafia 2 is great in 3D; especially New York in the snow. Half Life 2 works really well apart from a few bugs with the water. FlatOut 2 was the surprise star of the show though. We've put about 36 hours into that game alone. One of the best games either of us have tried in 3D, and yet it's not even rated by nVidia. Metro 2033 is another game that works brilliantly in 3D. The lighting effects, snow, and particularly the cracked glass of your gas mask really add a lot to the game. I can play it on normal graphics settings (trust me, it looks fine) at 1080p in 3D on a GTX 460 768MB too. World of Warcraft (blasphemy to a certain quoted poster above :D) works great in 3D too. Too bad it's not a very good game :p

As for films, the only one I've watched fully is Avatar, which works brilliantly. Watching it in 2D just isn't the same. Despicable Me looks really good in 3D from what I've seen of it as well.

With the price you'll pay for a 3D setup now (£160-ish for the LG monitor and about £100 - £110 for the 3D glasses last time I checked), the monitor is worth it over other similarly priced panels because of the 120Hz. You could always try it, and if you don't enjoy it, return it under DSR. I don't use mine that often at all really, but I'd rather have it there to use when I feel like it, than not have it there at all.

/essay again... :D

haha no all the infomation i get helps.

I love to game im a student so much free time hehe . . .

secondly id have to sell and buy another graphics card.. ( nivida ) nvida kit and monitor wise that £280 ish for the nvidia set as well as the monitor as linked about for around £160 ish...

im really kinda into this been looking into it for a while. i very much enjoy 3d in cinema even if its not peak at the moment.
it looks to be growing as more and more things are being realised for it .

Sorry to jump the thread but can someone tell me if going from a dual dvi to vga connector will the vga cable still support 120hz @ 1920x1080 or even 1200x800.. thanks.

I know that on all the first 3d lcd monitors that came out they do not support 3D through hdmi because they were not 1.4 mine included. As for vga I had 3D working on an old vga CRT while I waited for my monitor to arrive, the resolution/refresh rate sported is dependent on your graphics card but shouldn't be an issue unless your using something quite old, and also the monitor. I'm not sure about 3D LCD screens, I'll have a quick try just for curiosity's sake.

Thanks but this is for a Benq MW512 Projector.. the AMD ccc says my display supports up2 1920x1080 120hz but i can only run at 1024x768 120hz any res above this and it will drop to 60hz :s cant find a fix for it.

aaah right, well my monitor refused to work at 120Hz full hd on vga, said out of range, I tired 1280x800 and it worked but the 3D was a disaster, as if it was a bit out of sync, might just have been that the vga cable is not good enough quality for that kind of bandwidth and causing to much ghosting and that sort of thing. Hope you don't run into such problems with the projector :/ anyways its back to the crisp clearness of dvi for me I've had enough of this overly soft picture already :D

Thanks for trying that.. Im going to try a mates 6570 tomo as it has a vga socket unlike my 6950 i have a dvi-d to vga adaper at the min.. thanks again.
