So beats is being advertise as been the head phones to have for amazing sound quality. Do you get what you pay for or are they way to overpriced for what you get?

I'm just asking as I'd like some good headphones for my Ipod touch and I'd also like some for when I'm recording podcasts.

From what I've heard, no, theyre style over substance and better phones can be had from the likes of Sennhesier, Future Sonics et al for similar money.

Also, the iPod Touch isnt exactly the epitomy of sound quality anyway, compared to Cowon, Sony and certain Sansa models. So dOnt be too dissapointed if you spend a lot and gain little, it's all about the DAP and the signal thats been fed to the phones. Also be careful with the sensitivity (ohm value), which could leave you dissapointed in the max volume ceiling - as EU ipods are volume limited by law. Unless you import a one from the US like I did :)

The best phones I've had to date are my Hippo VB. They cost about £80, had to import them. Theyre very bass heavy with adjustable bass ports. The quality across the spectrum is good, but the sound is muddied a little due to the bass acoustics. It really depends on the type of music you listen to. Personally I love them, but thats because of the styles I listen to (various electronic genres).

Beats Studios and Pros are over-priced for what they are (not terrible just way too expensive for the SQ you get). Beats Solos are just plain awful.

A cheaper alternative for bass would be the Sony XB range or the Denon D1100.

Having listened to a few pairs i would say they are by no means bad headphones just suffer from a heavily inflated price due to them being the latest fashion accesory for 12-25 year old males.
If you gave the kind of price you are willing to pay a better recommendation can be made.

I can highly recommend the sennheiser hd25s, especially if you spend a lot of time on public transport as the isolation is great on them. However they are getting towards the expensive side of the headphone market

I've been using sennheiser hd-25 for 5 year or so now, every so often I get the urge to go try the latest hyped up phones and have yet to hear anything that's made me want to swap. If I lost them tomorrow I'd have no hesitation to get another pair.

Just searched for some HD25's but am struggling to find which ones are the ones you should get.

There seems to be a mkI and a mkII and out of the mkIIs they range from 75£ to £160.

Anyone care to explain which are the ones to get?

The ones you want are HD 25-1 II . There is a "Basic Edition" of these which is cheaper due to not coming with velour pads or travel bag.

When looking at them in photos online I always thought that they looked like plastic-y rubbish... I saw them in person in a shop today and they didn't disappoint.... the plastic headband had snapped.

Monster Beats are very bass heavy (think of a nightclub type of sound), so whilst the "quality" of the sound isn't the best, if you like bass and bassy music you'll enjoy them.

That said they are overpriced when compared to something like the Sony XB500 or XB700 paired with a cheap portable amp like a Fiio E3.

There are lots of options for headphones that are cheaper, better sounding overall and as bassy as the Beats though.

They are just an expensive fashion accessory that looks good around the neck and sounds half decent with hip-hop but little else.

@WatchTower - They might be the HD25-SP which are not the recommended version. The HD25-1 II is the usual one with the split headband and priced around £140.

Looking around on the net the cheapest you can get them for at the moment seems to be £139 for the basic edition from a place that sells decks. Dont be tempted by the inferior sp model its wroth the £40 extra.

I would recommend trying them on before purchase.

You can go with other people's opinions but at the end of the day sound is subjective

If you are referring to the HD25's. A friend of a friend, who is a DJ, dropped them in the mud without realising, when packing his gear away. He accidentally ran over them. Sure the headband broke, but the ear cups were fine and still worked.

You can buy spares, can that be said of the over priced Beats?

Had a go with some Beats headphones a couple of nights ago, they were something like £170 and quite frankly my trusty Beyerdynamics blew them away. Fashion statement is all i will say about them, heard better for a lot less.

I've got the studios, they are pretty good.

They look cool, and girls love 'em so just buy them already.

Yup i agree, doesnt matter that they are overpriced tripe, get them because girls [ or chavs] "love em"

Oh wait,i actually want to enjoy the music, forgeft what i just said.
