Aaron's Story
"I will probably have to close because I haven’t got insurance and I can’t afford the repairs,” - Aaron

Aaron has been in the Tottenham area for 41 years and at 89 is devastated by the damage to his livelihood.

Let's use the internet, spread this and all donate a couple of quid so Aaron can get his shop back up and running so he will not have to worry how he's going to make a living at his old age.

Who's behind this?
We are interns at BBH, a London advertising agency, and were touched by Aaron's story and wanted to help. We wanted to use this opportunity to show that youth and technology can be a force for good.

We are currently part of the first round of BBH Barn's interns.

All the money donated will be given directly to Aaron to help him get his Barbershop up and running again.

Thanks for your support,

Björn, Sophie and Omid

Evening Update 11/08/11
Hello everyone,

Busy day! Keep Aaron Cutting is a massive success so far and we're very happy. To answer a frequently asked question; "How much money does Aaron need and what are you doing with the excess money?"

All the money raised is of course for Aaron and his shop. If however it turns out that he doesn't need the full amount, we will discuss with him how we can use the fund to help the Tottenham community back on it's feet. Consider him the 'father' of the fund. First point of action, his shop.

More good news, we have a BBC television interview tomorrow morning with Aaron, and have been called today by many other media.

In the meantime, please keep spreading the word and get people donating. This is a wonderful example of how much good social media can do.

I think that this is an absolutely brilliant cause and that everyone with a shred of decency should donate something no matter how small that amount is.

This was only started yesterday but since then over £20,000 has been donated!

I can see that there will be more money donated than need but I am 90% sure it will be used for a good cause.

The link to donate via paypal is on that page. Like I said earlier, everyone should donate at least a small amount.

Flare.

Did he not have insurance?
If not, why was he running a business premises without insurance?

No public liability insurance, no building or contents insurance, so anything happening to anyone, with blade, scissors, chemicals, they would have got nothing from him, as he had not be legally responsible enough to comply with the law.

Much as I dislike what occurred during the riots, I won't be seeing myself further out of pocket by donating to the people of the area, let the locals do that. I'll be donating plenty through the massive taxbill.

Do you know how much insurance costs these days, this is a 89 year old that is still working in his community, maybe doing it for some extra money on his pension, he might of not put away money when he was younger, millions of people still dont.

He probably opened up every day, cut his usual clients hair and just enjoyed life and not invested or gone for a national chain of barbers.

You are such a **** with you clever wording, I bet you are a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing, he is a legend.

Amazing what people can do when they pull together.

I hope he gets enough for his repairs and can open up again soon !

Consider me donating.

If he is running a business he is legally required to have some forms of insurance, Public Liability being one of them.

Anyone who runs a business, regardless of how old they are, or how well loved within their community they are should have the foresight and business acumen to include the costs of running that business in the prices of their product or service and that includes insurance.

However, I see nothing wrong with helping this chap with a few quid to help him in the interim period so that he can continue serving the community while he waits for the insurance to settle. A donation will be forthcoming from my family as soon as I have checked the validity of the story.

Is it possible he has public liability insurance but not insurance covering his own property against theft/damage?

If he doesn't have the legally required insurance, sad tho it is, I haven't a huge amount of sympathy in that regard... very sad situation tho.

It takes a brave kinda man to let that guys shakey hands anywhere near their face with sharp objects. :p

Should he have had insurance, yes. Does that however mean he doesnt deserve sympathy, no. Well done to him I say for doing what he loves and adding to the community.

He may have public liability insurance, but nothing to cover his own property.

Yup, hence my rant and that guys obnoxious post.

Aren't the police supposed to pay for any damage caused by rioting?

lol they are broke

tbh even if he did have cover no doubt the insurance company which is probably broke would worm its way out of paying, claim he had the wrong cover or it was an act of god!

I'm torn about this, he can apply for (and will get) compensation through The Riot (Damages) Act (what weringo is thinking of). There isn't a threshold, nor an upper limit for compensation in that.
Whilst it is all well and good that people are doing this, it isn't necessary. The money could be much better spent elsewhere.

He's totally right about the police paying though. Riot Act (Damages) 1886. Don't belittle him because you don't know the facts. Though it's likely that the Treasury will pick up the costs. This was brought up in the debate in The Commons today.

")Where a house, shop, or building in [F1a police area] has been injured or destroyed, or the property therein has been injured, stolen, or destroyed, by any persons riotously and tumultuously assembled together, such compensation as hereinafter mentioned shall be paid out of [F2the police fund] of [F1the area] to any person who has sustained loss by such injury, stealing, or destruction; but in fixing the amount of such compensation regard shall be had to the conduct of the said person, whether as respects the precautions taken by him or as respects his being a party or accessory to such riotous or tumultuous assembly, or as regards any provocation offered to the persons assembled or otherwise."

Dont a lot of insurance companies even have rioting listed in the smallprint as a no-claim?

I know my house insurance says im not covered in the event of nuclear war etc

No? Why would they? If they caused the damage personally then yes it would be an expense but its just retarded to expect them (read: taxpayers) to pay for that scale of damage.

Riot laws from the late 1800 state that people can claim from local Police forces for any damage causes due to people rioting. It's been mentioned a fair bit today on various radio stations, insured or not, he can claim off the local police for it.

However at 89, I'd be surprised if he could. I also don't think he gets long to do it - something like 7 days from when it damage occurred.
