Seriously? When did buying/owning a balaclava become illegal?

Source?

I got it wrong, it was 6 months and he had a bin liner as well lol

SENTENCED:

Jordan Kelly (born 09/01/1991) of Kerswell Walk, Newton Heath, was jailed for six months for going equipped. He was arrested on Oldham Road, Ancoats, around 3.30pm on Wednesday 10 August 2011 after officers found him with a balaclava and a bin liner.

It's true, I read it in the Guardian this morning. The crime was going equipped for burglary and let's be honest, it's hard to think of a good reason why someone would be in possession of a balaclava in Manchester city centre in the middle of summer - Manchester can be cold but not that cold.

Hmm, it does seem stretching it a little to me, I suppose normally going equipped would mean some tools for breaking in, but with a riot going on that part was unneccessary :p

I am just slightly perturbed by the reports that Cameron wants to crack down on face masks (or covering ones face), as this does imply guilt until proved innocent.

And I know the arguement will be why do you need to wear a balaclava, but I am reminded of the recent thread where someone was moaning about the Muslim women wearing the burkha in the supermarket and they said would you feel threatened by 20 people wearing a balaclava in the supermarket - and I believe it was Castiel who replied no of course not, it is up to them if they want to wear a face covering, it didn't imply anything (paraphrasing)

All Cameron has promised is that the police will have the power to ask people to remove facial coverings, not that he wants to ban them or anything.

To be fair, the reporting of some of what has been discussed in parliament is shocking however.

you do have to also be in a certain circumstance to be charged with it.

We're only ever four hot meals away from anarchy is what they say, this is just proof of it to be honest.

Not really, we have "bred" some monster who think all should be handed to them. Human desire, if not properly educated, grows exponentially, these kids want it all, just like that, without effort put into it or reflecting if they really need all that stuff.

Also Greater Manchester Police have continued their hard stance by publishing photos, name and addresses of all those charged.

Get all the forces to do it. Have a daily feature in the newspapers for a month. A bit of public humiliation would be a good addition to any punishment they get.

Leicester police have been doing this. They teamed up with the Leicester Mercury and published a persons face on the front page. He was arrested later that day after they were inundated with calls about who he was. They also have CCTV images of the people involved on their website, although a few people have actually come forward to hand themselves in.

10 Explanations for the riots

Interesting article on the possible underlying cause of the riots. I agree with 9/10 of them, the one I don't agree is the new social networking technology.

As riots spread across England this week, so too did a wealth of 'misinformation' about them.

Doesn't this tell you something? :roll eyes:

Hide it! Before some people can see it :D

Too late, it's all around the web now. :D

The one they are missing is that some people are just scum (as witnessed by the number of employed people and so on going through the courts).

Of course, even if we agree with the causes, it's the solutions we're likely to disagree on...
