so basically what i need is so specs for a budget pc that will handle his video editing.

upto a max of £350 if poss

wont require a monitor as will hook up to a lcd tv, windows isnt a issue either

many thx for help in advance

Hi there,

May I ask what else needs to be included in the budget other than the tower (eg is he needing a mouse, keyboard, speakers)?

Also, do you have any spare desktop parts that your could reuse so it doesn't eat into the budget (eg DVD drive, case, PSU etc)?

What I think

AMD x6 1090T BE
Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3
Corsair Vengence Blue 8GB (2x4gb)
Samsung Spinspoint F3 1TB
Lepa W-series 500w '80 plus
Coolermaster elite 342 case
Samsung DVDrw

£410 inc P+P

Considering he's video editing, he will need 8gb RAM, a 1TB HDD and a high core CPU. a quad core might get away with it, but Im considering that hex cores are awesome at video editing.

If you want to budget out abit more, you can drop to an AMD X4, 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD and save about £60, but then it might not be up to the task.

A i5 2300 is fast - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-2500-2400-2300.html

And your not buying a dead end AM3 socket.

*edit*
while your here stulid, do you reckon using the cuda cores of an nvidia graphics card would be sensible for video editing if it meant dropping to 4GB RAM and an i3 2100?

Needs Nvidia card thats got lots of cuda cores, dont know what you can get for £50 thats fast?

not really into gaming as he has xbox, so no need for high spec gpx card

thx

havent built pc's for a few yrs now and not really up on latest tech
so would need 1tb and 8gb ram and a quad core as a min?

how are the Phenom II X6 compared to sandybridge chips, price and performace wise, always been an amd guy, but reading sandybridge wipes floor with amd atm

but reading sandybridge wipes floor with amd atm

That sums it up really, they are faster, less power hungry/produce less heat and you can put a i7 2600 into the motherboard.

If you didnt get a AM3+ board then what you currently see for sale is all you can get to upgrade.

Heres a i5 2400 vs a 1100T (both the next step up from a i5 2300 and 1090BE) - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/363?vs=203

cheers 4 that looks like i be heading to intel for 1st time ever:eek: i know bulldozer is on its way, but by what im reading, its still a one horse race

cheers guys for the info

just to mix things up a bit, OcUK have just started selling refurbished Nvidia cards (when i say just started, i mean about twenty minutes ago)

i'll leave it up to stulid to decide which would be better out of his i5 2300 build and mine, but this is seriously worth a thought since you can use the cuda cores to do the video encoding super quickly (and it'll be far better at gaming too)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £89.99
1 x OcUK GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - Bare OEM £86.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black (with 500w Elite Power PSU) £64.99
1 x MSI H61M-P23 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 REVISION** £44.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500413AS) £28.99
1 x OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Low-Voltage Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3G1333LV4GK) £21.98
1 x Samsung SH-S222AL/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.98
1 x OcUK Value PCI Express 6-Pin to 4-Pin Power Adaptor for PCI-E Graphics Cards (RB-527) £1.99
Total : £370.01 (includes shipping : £11.75).

its a touch over budget, but a video editing + encoding program that uses the cuda cores of the graphics card it should be super fast. it'll also blow stulids build out of the water if you want to play games on it too

just so you know i'm not 100% sure what 'bare OEM' means right now, but what it looks like is you get a refurbished card with a 1 year warranty without any of the extra bits and bobs you get with retail cards. with my GTX 460 i got a few adapters, a disk with old drivers on it and possibly a couple of other things that i cant remember

Uggh, OCZ Gold DDR3 RAM has the worst reputation ever..

4GB only:(

500GB HDD only:(

No quad core:( for when the programs dont use CUDA:(
