Is it me or are a lot of semi professional / professional people moving to Australia form the UK?

I just found out another one of my close friends is moving out there and I have met quite a few other people over the last couple of years who where in the process or thinking about moving.

So its it really that nice out there? Or are people just attracted by what looks like a better pay package only to find that the cost of living is much higher.

I'd love to live out there. It's my dream to go there one day and go to an NRL game. I know somebody from the UK who moved to Perth and they have never looked back.

Well I can tell you something, if you love your cars, then good luck with the import tax.

I'd only consider moving if I was paid a lot more and I was allowed to by the Australian border control, otherwise , I'd rather stay here. Closer to friends and family, weather is not a big thing to me, and I prefer the refinement English people have on the whole over the Australian style of living.

I lived in Australia for 5 years and returned to the UK 18 months ago, due to work commitments. I'm now making plans to return for good. The country has a lot going for it and I reckon my kids will be better off growing up there than the UK. Rightly or wrongly this place depresses me.

I spent about 3 months in oz earlier this year and wouldn't hesitate on moving there if the opportunity came up. I travelled from Cairns to Melbourne so experienced a fair chunk of the country. It has its problems like anywhere and it would be naive to think its all sunshine and rainbows. However, on the whole, the sun, beach and barbecues are really great. I like the Aussie mindset and their outlook on life. Saw England win the Ashes at the MCG which was an experience I'll never forget. Driving a 4X4 and camping on Fraser Island was awesome. I dove the Great Barrier Reef, too.

It sounds silly but that is one of the major things that would put me off going. I love cars and dream of owning a 911 one day but they are 170k AUD out there (so I am told).

Its a shame they don't let you bring in one car Tax fee as a personal import when you move over there as most other countries do for new emigrants.

my cousin did it with her fella, my sister looks like she is going to do it too. there is a big part of me which says i should atleast see if i could make it possible but i just don't know if i'd want to be that far away from my folks. not in a 'i need looking after kind of way' but if anything happened to them now and looking after them when they get older, i just don't know if i could do it and certainly wouldn't want to leave all the pressure on my younger brother and sister. i've explained this side of things to other people who have been over there on visa's and they reply with 'but it's only a 24 hour flight back' but it's not, it would be a very big problem should something happen and i needed to come back.

Going out there post uni, was born there and so have no need to get a visa or anthing.

I want to go and see what all the fuss is about but the 24 hour flight really puts me off. Excuse my ignorance but what is there to actually do out there other than the beaches/great diving spots and riding kangaroos?

Brother moved out there few years ago to start a business importing Chinese lighting, going well and he loves it.

Will probably never see him again as the place holds zero interest for me.

A banker friend of mine said Australia is the place to be at the moment. Going through a 1950's style American boom. Considering moving out there if they let me in.

I moved to NZ and would never go back. In fact the thought of crowded roads, 20% vat, crap healthcare, high income tax rates, crap weather, expensive fuel, chavs, disrepect people give each other, unfriendly shop staff and ridiculously expensive trains makes me shiver. Luckily I have NZ residency now so don't have to move back woo!

A lot of kiwis also move to Aus as the wages are better. I'm happy living in the middle of nowhere next to the sea these days though so Oz can keep it's money as I'm happy enough without spiders and snakes!!

There are loads of Brits over here who have left because they hate the way UK professionals are treated. It seems you get punished with more taxes the more you want to succeed over there. The doctors here get paid a lot more than the UK despite this country only having 4mil people. They leave the NHS and no longer have to work weekends, etc and rant all the time about the NHS and it's working conditions.

That said they are strict here on health tourism and you have to show your passport if you want to register at a doctor. No 2 year work visa or residents permit and you have to pay for everything so no drain is put on the health care system which I thought was great even when I didn't have residency and had to pay for it. I thought it was great that a country has the balls to say NO if you dont pay tax here you don't get the discounted healthcare.

The medics here that moved from the UK said they hated it in the UK when people were coming across from abroad and costing the NHS loads of money then going home again and abusing the system. Apparently the passport system is meant to be used in the UK but isn't due to some human rights crap.

Europe is to blame for that!!!

Well, i guess I am lucky that i have can move to Hong Kong tomorrow should I choose to as I have an ID card. Would prefer Australia or the US but it's not a bad back up! :p

Still, I like the all the green of England though, it's hard to get a breather and relax in Hong Kong.
