How I met your mother is a must.
I also like My name is Earl.
Im not really up to date on current TV shows, dont really watch TV oddly considering I have 3 in my bedroom
Ill be taking some suggestions from this thread with me.

How has no one put The Mentalist yet?!
*The Mentalist - It's funny but serious and the main character Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) is ace.
*True Blood - I thought this was gonna be really girly, I watched it a loved it, again funny and serious with some neat characters.
*Fringe - The odd episode is really poor, but as a hole its awesome.
*The Walking Dead - Really good but short series, 2nd one in the making, highly recommended.
*Game of Thrones - I know what happens, this series is so good I'm actually dreading the end...
*House - Hugh Laurey is legendary in it, it's abit of a repetitive formula, but a consistently good programme.

Spartacus Blood and Sand - Bloody violence, scenes of a sexual nature, good story
Spartacus Gods of the Arena - See above, this is the prequel
Game of Thrones - Bit like lord of the rings
Through the Wormhole series 1 & 2 - Documentaries about the universe and stuff.

In addition to the shows I mentioned above, here are some more great shows well worth watching:
The World at War - It's an ancient documentary about WWII, but it is done so well and narrated by none other than Laurence Olivier.
Louie - A comedy entirely about the life of a fictional version of comedian Louie C.K. It's hilarious and clever, but not in the way you would immediately think.
The X-Files - You must know what this is (are aliens/monsters/government conspiracies real?). But if you haven't watched them in sequence and got an understanding of the mythology then this show is well worth coming back to.
Justified - Old style lawman comes home, shoots a load of folks. Really fun show with decent writing and great characters.
Luther - Great cop show with some really fun/nasty villains. The star is Idris Elba - if you don't know who this is then imediately watch every episode of "The Wire" and then come back.
The Vampire Diaries - I'm not gonna mention the synopsis - it sounds just like Twilight and you will discount it immediately. Put it this way - I watched this after a few recommendations and have come to realise it is a really quality bit of television.
The Borgias - Read the wikipedia article on real Borgia family then image how that would look as a 18 rated US cable show with high production values and Jeremy Irons as the star.
Terminator: The Sarah Chronicles - The third best thing ever to come out with the terminator name on it. Plus it has summer glau.
Supernatural - Two brother hunt daemons in their car.
Deadwood - Gritty Drama about an US frontier camp/town, with Ian McShane and a wealth of amazing actors and some fantastic writing.
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer - Probably one of the best TV shows last decade - excellent writing, great characters and overarching stories that really pay off. If you end up liking this then watch Angel after you have seen season 3 of buffy.

Some of the ones I've seen and really enjoyed, probably missed a few off mind 
Really can not recommend The West Wing enough, best Television show I've ever seen period.
Dexter is just brilliant too, mainly due to the two main characters.

can't belive no one has mentioned jericho. Only 2 seasons, and 2nd season was only 7 episodes due to the writers strike, but absolutely brilliant.
