Everyone’s move to Australia

My girlfriends working out there. She's working at a mine logging cores. As a holiday she loves it, going up and down the coast on her breaks. Apart from that she hates it. I would have happily moved out there but she cant wait to get home. So its obviously not for everyone. She's also not the first or 2nd person ive spoken to that hasnt liked Oz.
 
My youngest brother and his wife moved out to Adelaide back in Feb...shes a GP so has a 4yr contract or something...so far he hasnt had much luck in the job dept but having spoken to him a few days ago, it looks like they might be moving to Brisbane later this yr as they find Adelaide a bit too quiet for themselves.

I might go out in xmas time to visit him as i havent been to Australia myself and its one of my places id like to visit...i have no intentions of moving there myself as im planning to go back to Canada sometime soon...just need to sell my house here and things arent so good property wise.

But so far he likes Aus but misses his family ie my mum the most as hes the baby of the family.

Seriously though, i disagree with much of what Heliospherez has said.

Curiously though i have grown quite protective of Darwin and Australia as a whole. Something i never felt while living in the UK.

Sure, some things are more expensive than in the UK but i still reckon that the standard of living here is higher. I have way more disposable income now that i have ever had (and no i dont work in mining, im just a lowly photocopier fixer upper).
The cold wet weather you spoke of really depends on where in Aussie you live.

I do agree with Heliospherez final statement though that you have to consider everything.
 
Well I've been contemplating it for a year or so but did a masters instead. I'm still contemplating it for the next few months as well depending on jobs.

Mg tame though js probably a little different. I plan on going with little money and a working holiday Visa then getting a job in mining. Then spend a year or so having fun somewhere new. If I don't like it I come back. If I do then I'll probably be able to get a sponsorship somewhere.

I've got several friend there at the moment that seem to be enjoying it muchly and I also have several friends here that have done it and said they enjoyed it but wouldn't go back or are currently applying for jobs.

I think one of the big reasons for people emmigrating over there is that its so much easier than getting into the US or even Canada.

Just out of Interest - what makes you like Darwin. How did you end up there and how long have you been there ?

It was one of the places I looked into emigrating to. Funnily enough - it seems to get a bad press from Australians that live in the other major cities - but anyone that lives there actually likes the place even though it isn't really anything like the other major cities in Australia (from what I can see)

I guess i was/am one of the lucky ones. I was sponsored on a 457 visa prior to emigrating. Came over here in July 2006 and never looked back. Bit a difference to Banbury where i used to live.
I love the Tropical weather (well thats the Pommie weather talking bit out of the way)... life here is relaxed. The beaches are good much as you get down the east coast but without the people. Most mainstream sport is no further than 15 minutes drive way. The place isnt a PC driven as the UK with many businesses having 'beer oclock' at 4.30 :). Oh and you have the bush on your doorstep.... 45 mins drive and you are out of phone signal range. I guess i like the remote aspect of live here although Darwin isnt what i would consider to be populated by hillbillys :).
The downside to Darwin is the insane house prices and perhaps also the quality of education compared to other States. However, i do not believe that education is the sole resonsibility of teachers no matter where you live. Oh, and i suppose i consider myself primarily a Territorian and Secondarily an Australian.

Forget wildlife stories, its always over exagerated.

it's all very well with the 'beer o'clock' attitude to work but what happens when one actually needs something doing during 'beer o'clock'?
 
The few things I miss about the uk are being able to catch a bus to almost anywhere, if needed and seeing my family and friends. Although skype is great for helping with one of those.
 
My biggest problem with moving from the place where i grew up was that, i don't have a big group of friends or even people that i know. My home town i could walk through the shopping center and bump in to people that i knew from school. It is difficult to get to know many people in a new country. Unless you know someone who already has a big group of friends you are limited to people you meet at work or run in to when you are out and about. But it will take years to get to know loads of people. I think that is one of the biggest reasons for people moving back to where they grew up. However if you have limited family and friends or are going over with a other half to start a family. Then it can be a different.

I would rather go to america than australia, i am not fond of the australian accent, the girls are nice out there though. As i grew up in SA i think i could easily get a long with the australia. But i would rather go to other countries first, i have an uncle that is now a grand father that lives out in aus.
