Hi guys,

Don't have much time to come on here much any more but i know a lot of you are big car nuts so hoping you can advise me.

Currently got a Vauxhall Signum 2.2Dti Design spec at the moment, which was purely bought as it looked quite funky, but 45mpg and niggly little faults are driving me insane. There good side to it is that it's quite large and with a newborn daughter, is perfect.

Pushing just over 100,000 miles now though, i'm looking to get rid and buy something new/newer.

Been loving the idea of a SEAT Leon Hatchback (05 on) 1.6 TDI CR Ecomotive SE 5d as it's 5 door, diesel and does 74 mpg as well as having no road tax and is cheaper on insurance. I'm thinking these lower engine sized diesels are the way forward?

It doesn't sound very pokey though but i guess you sacrifice that with decent fuel economy as 103bhp isn't exactly screaming out to me.

So wondered if anyone else could recommend anything.

I'm wanting to go back to a hot hatch but has to be bigger than the likes of a fiesta due to the pram. Also has to have the usual stuff i expect now such as cruise control, climate control and i'd also like to have built-in sat nav and a way of connection my iphone 4.

Most importantly though, it must have good fuel economy, so we're talking 70mpg +

I don't want a Toyota anything, as the Prius and Auris are just god damn ugly.

So tell me what's about that would fit the bill.

Price wise, as close to £10,000 as possible and under £20,000 but that's if new. If buying second hand i'd want nearly new/old demonstrator and would obviously want a lot cheaper price.

Seriously?

And then you tell us you want to go back to a hot hatch but you've got a Seat Leon 1.6 diesel as your front runner?

The best car for your needs sounds like the one you already have - especially with a new family at 24 and, from your previous threads, loads of debt.

Don't whack yourself up with what I presume will be a massive finance agreement just to get no road tax, it makes no sense.
 
Do you want 70mpg+ "real world" economy? If so, prepare to be disappointed.

60 may be acheivable in some small, slow, "eco" cars (such as the one you have posted). Otherwise you're looking at 50-55.

as said above 5 figures to get no road tax, and slightly better fuel economy seems... like quite a waste in real terms.
You'd be far better off keeping what you've got and just putting the money you're saving into fuel
 
Perhaps some sort of electric powered vehicle would suit sir?

I seriously love people who'll spend thousands to save a few quid on road tax. Such fantastic comedy value.
 
Your criteria do not meet your circumstances. 45mpg is very very good and if you need 70mpg to not feel the pinch then why on earth are you spending £10k on a car in the first place?

£10,000 buys a LOT of fuel and also fixes any faults with your current car.
 
Do you do a lot of miles for work or something? I can't see the sense in wanting to spend a five figure sum to get a new car with better fuel economy and no road tax when your current car does 45mpg.
 
Well I can get 65+ mpg, 0-60 in 9 sec.... but not both at the same time. Probably get faster acceleration with a remap.

Summary - you won't get a hot hatch and high fuel economy.

I don't remember saying i wanted to spend that on a car with no road tax? I said i liked the idea behind the Leon with no road tax.

The car i have is getting old and i have the money to get a new one, so i want to.

I have the money to buy the car, and don't need a finance agreement? Don't remember saying that and i have no debt thanks.

Sadly i know 70mpg+ is unlikely in real world usage but i know 65 can be for instance.

Was just looking at the 165bhp Astra that does 62mpg in real-world usage so im told so that is the type of car im most likely looking at.

It seems like you are about to spend a seemingly mindbogglingly large amount of money on a completely ordinary car for no rational reason at all. You've got £20k in cash kicking around yet are finding 45mpg heavy going and free road tax rather than £120 a year appealing?

As with every thread you have ever posted on this forum it yet again makes no sense.

Buy a used Golf or something for £9995. Don't let trivial costs like insurance differential and road tax influence such a huge purchase. It's just nonsensical.

If you really want to buy a brand new ecohatchback then test drive them all and buy the one you like best, you'll have a warranty so reliability doesnt matter and frankly most of them are all much of a muchness. I'd probably have the new Focus though, the Leon is absolutely ancient and well past its sellby date.

My mileage is starting to increase and will involve driving in other countries a few times a year too.

I'm not worried about the road tax but commented that it was a good deal clincher on the Leon. I pay 200+ at the moment, so these new economical diesel engines are a lot lower i know so win win situation.

I don't need it, but if im going to buy a new car, i may as well buy one that is more economical, I've had a car that did 25mpg and i hated forever filling up in it.

I have started to yes. I need a new car, so makes sense buying one that is better on fuel.

I never said free road tax was essential, i said it was nice on the Leon.

I have the money to buy a new car, and want a new car, and also need a new car so believe it or not, i want a new car. If i can get something a bit quicker with cheaper road tax and cheaper insurance and better fuel economy then im happy and with new cars, the engines are better so are more economical and have less emissions so its all good in my eyes.

Yes but not at the same time. My point is that you only get the good fuel economy if you drive with a light foot ! I have had 80mpg on long runs (58mph on the motorway)... but I still have enough poke to get me out of trouble if I need it.

That's exactly what i'm after, poke when needed but on the motorway, i want something that can give me good duel economy :)

One other question - I'm sure that I remember you posting about not working and being on ESA so how on earth can you find 20k to spend on a new car?
