Found someone selling a X4 640 3GHZ for a decent price, I'm wondering would it give me a massive boost for the next 2 months. Or is it worth it at all

Well apart from the standard clock speed to your oc then no but you can oc the x4 to 3.4 maybe. The x4 640 is cheap now so it must be a good deal, also its quad so it takes some pressure out of the 2 cores.

mainly to play games like crysis 2, bulletstorm, cpu seems under stress and for 50-70quid, might be worth it, or wait and spend 300-400 on new i7 and mobo

I'd say £60 for a second hand one, or if your board will take it get a phenom x4 965 new as its cheap at the mo and quick, warranty aswell ;)

well i found
AMD Phenom 2 X4 940 BE AM2+

already overclocked to 3.6ghz at £75.. but dunno if I should go with an 1055T 95w edition as I've delayed building my rig for 4 months as I'm gunna move out again...so deposit monies need to be saved

Suggestions?

TBH I would say £75 for a Phenom II X4 940 is expensive, one went on the MM for under £60 during the week.

The Phenom II X4 940 is also DDR2 only so would not work with your PC...

I would look out for a Phenom II X4 955 or a Phenom II X6 for a little more....

Also your signature is not within the rules so best take a look at that...

I dont understand what you mean, whats not within the rules? I'm trying to find the 95w version of the X6 1055T as it's the max my mobo will support, but I've come across places asking £150+...

Also whats MM

Your sig is too big, check the rules.

MM is the Members Market, requires something like 250+ posts and 90 days forum membership + activated trust before you can access it.

why do you want the 95W one so bad...? the one I got is 125W TDP, still clocks to about 4.1GHZ so far, just after having a quick play around. don't think its worth the premium you'd have to pay to get the 95W version.

well that is an interesting dilemma, wouldn't imagine that leaves any room for potential overclocking, at least not with an X6. but still with their Turbo Core thing and those extra cores, would imagine it would be a nice boost from current setup.

Well I'm gaming at the moment, and anything would be worth upgrading, and I can't be bothered to reinstall windows and spend more money on a new mobo, so the CPU is the only thing I can upgrade. Wouldnt need to overclock, just want it to run games as smooth as possible.

It depends what you do and the rest of the spec/what res you play at. If your card is not a bottleneck (or anything else for that matter) and you play games supporting multiple cores, you should see a benefit yes. What are your specs?

Also, check the other forum, you have a PM. :p

EDIT: How on earth did I miss that sig? Give us a sec!

EDIT2: What games do you play?

EDIT3: Not sure if it would be a huge benefit given your spec, will leave this to someone else to answer

It's all coming back to me now! I remember the thread :D

Res at the lowest would be 1280x1024, mainly play around 1680x1248 (or around that) rest of the specs are in my sig, I should hope with the OC my GPU shouldnt be limited too much?

P.S How the hell do I check pm's on this forum, cannot find it anywhere (never had a pm before)

I'm not sure then. I saw a big increase going from an X2 5000+ to mine but that's a whole different architecture. Someone else will know this better.

And, as regards to PMs, check a different forum :p
